Lost ability to open UBUNTU software store
in flag

While I seem to get almost daily system updates, I have lost the ability to manually open the UBUNTU software store, (using the embedded app). The app opens and I can use the search box, all software store options do nothing but show the "busy" circle for over 30 minutes. I thought I remembered seeing a "populating catalog" box when you first open it. That's gone and so are all the available packages ...

Wired connection only works when plugged in before startup

When I plug in my ethernet cable before startup, the wired connection works. However, if I boot with the ethernet cable unplugged or turn off the wired connection after startup, I am unable to reconnect to a wired connection. The only way for me to make wired connection work again is to restart my PC with the ethernet cable plugged in. I am running on Ubuntu 20.04 (Windows dual-boot) and have a Lenovo I ...

Ubuntu 20.04, how to recover data on disk?
cn flag

I saw many different questions about recovery. I was amazed at how many ways things could go bad. I don't know what happened, but I was watching TV on my computer one evening and then the next day it would not boot. Gparted says it is "unallocated". I have done searches to see what is available to recover a drive. There seem to be many available from the search but none seem to exist for Ubuntu 2 ...

Unable to install Ubuntu 20.04 on system with Windows 10
ru flag

I've recently purchased a Dell Vostro 3500 with Windows 10 pre-installed. It is a UEFI system. I don't want to keep Windows 10 and I want to replace it with Ubuntu 20.04. I followed the regular method as follows:

  1. Created a live USB for Ubuntu
  2. Changed boot order in BIOS to boot it from the live USB (a note: for some reason it showed two different options in BIOS; both are my live USB)

Ubuntu Server Keyboard Map Correct but Wrong?
cn flag

I've installed Ubuntu Server 20.04.2 on a Bhyve VM inside of TrueNas, connecting via VNC.

I am struggling with the keyboard input though and because it's Server, there's no GNOME UI to adjust things easily.

I know the Keyboard inside Bhyve works as I've also got a Win10 VM setup and the keyboard input is perfect so it can only be a Ubuntu issue.

For example,

if I type | I get ~

Reload current keyboard layout after making changes
us flag

I am developing bug fixes to keyboard layouts.

For now, I am not adding any new layouts; I am just making changes to existing ones. I do this by directly modifying the layout files in /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols.

After making a change, I would like to test if it behaves as expected. Usually this affects the keyboard layout which is already active on my machine. I am in an X11 session, not on a tty ...

Nautilus sometimes spins and doesn't load everything in a dir (even a small dir)
mx flag

I often find that when I browse around my local disk using nautilus, it will not display everything, and just shows a little spinner icon. This isn't just for large directories. Sometimes, even a folder with 2-3 files will cause it to behave like this (maybe show 2 files and spin permanently, instead of showing all 3).

If I just back up one directory and go back, it usually reloads immediately.

I'm on Ubuntu 20, I'm using i3 as windows manager on two monitors.

I get Activation of Connection Failed - after restarting

I found dozens of these questions but they either didn't work or were way too specific for the user.

I have Lenovo Thinkpad E15 and freshly installed Ubuntu 20.04. First, it didn't find any wireless adapter but after researching a bit I installed the rtw89 driver and it worked, well halfway at least.

My home network connects but after rebooting it doesn't and gives "Activation of Connection failed." ...

How do I go about fixing my system freezing every time I launch a video after installing mpv?

Since installing mpv, every time I launch a video, my system completely freezes, and I have to do a hard shutdown. Even when trying to use another media player, the same thing happens. I'm new to Linux and am trying it out on an external drive using Kubuntu.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
