How can I see the “console” on my VirtualBox install of 20.04?
ng flag

I used to see all the system messages, etc. when I booted up my 20.04 VM. I still see all of that, but after it’s finished, instead of seeing the login prompt I now have a GUI with a login prompt. Is there a way to get rid of this?

Shutter is complaining about that can't locate Carp/Always.pm in @INC

I made a full upgrade from Ubuntu v18 to Ubuntu v20.

Shutter was not upgraded - it was removed. I was trying to install from CRAN or from source. Both complain about old Perl libraries.

When I am trying to compile from source and run it, this is the message I get... I read somewhere that I can have two Perl installations in my system. However, I do not know if the problem is of that kind - does it r ...

Open only GIMP's color selector or open it directly upon invocation?
my flag

I like GIMP's color selector, which pops up as a dialog window when one clicks a color square in GIMP's toolbox.

Color selector

Is there a way to launch only the color selector without the overhead of loading GIMP? If not, can I specify from the command-line that I want to open the color selector straight away?

This doesn't happen with all unicode characters, but does happen with scissors: ✂️ It seems to be a problem independent of font as I've tried multiple different monospace fonts, patched and unpatched with "Nerd fonts" (I did try system default monospace)

Can I copy a file to two drives at the same time from a single read? (Copy one-to-two in single operation, preferably in rsync)

I frequently need to back up a source disk to multiple target disks. At the moment the workflow is rsync from source to target1 then dd clone target1 to target2.
It would be lovely if I could rsync from source to target1+target2 sequentially in the same read operation to greatly speed things up. Read the file into memory one time and write it to two separate hard drives in grand synchrony.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
