Can Ubuntu be configured to protect uSD card on Orange Pi Zero (or similar board) from a power outage?
us flag

I have an Orange Pi Zero board running Ubuntu (Xenial??) on a micro SD card. When the power is interrupted, the filesystem gets messed up in subtle ways. You can still login and cd around in the filesystem and do a "reboot" or "poweroff" command but certain files we created do not exist anymore. Is there any way to "freeze" the important parts of the filesystem to make it more robust in case the power i ...

Override BIOS limitation on CPU frequency

Similar to previous questions (example 1, example 2), the BIOS is limiting my CPU frequency because of a bad connection with the center pin of the adapter on my Dell Precision M5520 (which leads to BIOS warning: "The AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined. The battery may not charge. The system will adjust the performance to match the power available."). Indeed the computer is very s ...

Can't login SSH, "connection closed by [host] port 22". Need to reboot machine remotely
jp flag

For starters, I won't have physical access to this machine for about a month, so I'm looking for a way to remotely reboot it. I've ssh'd to it dozens of times in the past, but it seems like it booted up cranky and isn't taking SSH connections. If there is a way to force a reboot without authentication, I'll take that answer too, but I'd like to figure out this SSH error. Tried SSH from MacOSX, Ubuntu ...

Lost custom settings upgrading Ubuntu from 20.10 to 21.04
jp flag

Argh. I went ahead and upgraded Ubuntu but didn't realize it wouldn't preserve my system settings - background, menus, system theme, preferences, system sound, settings, fonts, everything... I can't even run Scrivener. I didn't think to run backups or save whatever files you would save before inputting the command to upgrade in the terminal. Is there any hope to restore or should I just go ahead working ...

Q: Ubuntu 21.04 strange Vino behaviour
us flag

I've a strange behavior for Gnome screen sharing feature (Vino). I'm not sure what is wrong but sometimes it works flawlessly but after some time (i.e. 2 hours after it works) it doesn't work anymore. I haven't found out what might be the issue. Sometimes it helps to disable screen sharing and enable it again, sometimes I have to change connection to prompt and than back to password protected session. I ...

How to explicitly specify the sender with the alpine e-mail client?
mx flag

I seem to have run into a situation where configuring the alpine e-mail client (formerly just pine) for a specific user seems to override some configuration so that the username for the operating system account is used from within alpine to determine who the e-mail is from.

Why is this happening, generally?

How is the sender explicitly configured?

Ubuntu upgrade failure - how to recover system or at least files
us flag

I have just had a gigantic failure of upgrade and I am in desperate need for help.

I tried to follow the instructions to upgrade ubuntu 18.04 to 20.04. But when the process was showing 'connecting to server' at 0%, I stupidly pressed ctrl+c to stop it. This caused significant problems.

I rebooted the system, now i dont even have the right ubuntu version. I cannot describe it properly because the sys ...

How can I decrease the size of a LVM partition and add it to another LVM partition?
cn flag

I have 2 logical volumes, both part of a volume group called "ubuntu--vg". These partitions are /dev/mapper/ubuntu--vg-ubuntu--lv and /dev/mapper/ubuntu--vg-media. Originally, during my fresh install, only /dev/mapper/ubuntu--vg-ubuntu--lv was made out of the volume group with 1 TB of storage. ubuntu--lv had only 200gb of storage, so I made another logical volume that took up the remaining ~800gb.

Ubuntu 20.04 as Bluetooth Speaker (A2DP sink) - volume control broken
us flag

I have been able to pair my iPhone SE (iOS 14.4.2) with my Ubuntu Desktop (20.04) using the default bluetooth settings application and I can play music and this is great but controlling the volume from iOS is not working. When I bring the volume all the way down to silent/mute the Ubuntu Desktop does mute its output but all volume levels above zero result with 100% volume.

How to set the scaling of the display through command line?
us flag

If I use a second monitor on Ubuntu 20.04 and if it has the highes resolution (4K), the 1st screen keeps glitching. I found out after many tries that putting it to 175% of fractional scaling then 200% again will fix this issue, however it returns after the screen sleeps

So, I'd like a way to change to 175% and then 200% from command line so I can automate this into a script

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
