ng flag

I'm running Ubuntu 18.04 on a DELL server with 128GB of RAM

When RAM usage reaches 100%, the system freezes immediately. I can move the coursor for a couple of seconds and then have to reboot the system. Swap file (8GB) usage according to htop preservers zero.

What else can be the reason of the crashing?

Unable to format HDD
cn flag

A friend of mine gave me his external 2TB Seagate HDD which appeared to be somewhat faulty. And, it is indeed pretty faulty.

First, I did try a lot of "common" commands, spent a few hours googling stuff, tried Linux and Windows (for chkdsk), opened the HDD case to plug it directly in SATA and I'll add that I do not need to recover the data, I just need to format it.

'Preload' files into swap instead of RAM / add more ram without open computer
ng flag

I would apprechiate to load files from a HDD to RAM. I do not want to create a tmpf or anything. The files should go to swap. I can't push them into RAM because no free ram anymore.

The Problems are: Ubuntu doesn't cache the files from a nextcloud server. Because I'm using an HDD it can be very slow - I also have a Minecraft Server running so no more RAM free. Linux doesn't put the files to swap  ...

Ubuntu Desktop 20.04 sudden random turn off
tr flag

I'm on Ubuntu Desktop 20.04 with a LENOVO ThinkPad L13 Yoga.

Since a few days ago, Ubuntu randomly suddenly turns off. No Shut down just an immediate turn off. It looks like a power loss. It sometimes happens after 1 minute sometimes after a couple of hours.

I use Ubuntu alongside windows 10. This doesn't happen in windows.

Edit:

The last lines of journalctl show that the problem is overheating:

hi I'm trying to install a theme on Ubuntu Studio 20.04 with Xfce. It is a theme from gnome-look.org

The various online guides for Xubuntu say to go to Whisker Menu > Window Manager to choose a theme, and that this menu is reading /usr/share/themes

But not all the folders there appear in the Window Manager, including the new one I want to add

How can I scrobble the output of SongRec?

Using Ubuntu that I runs as my desktop I want to be able to automatically scrobble my record/CD playing on my stereo to last.fm.

SongRec does a great job of recognising and reporting on the songs by listening in through a microphone so the source doesn't matter. It gathers all the required information.

I can export a CSV from the GUI of SongRec and I can import it into last.fm.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
