why is process accounting file empty and dump-acct output nothing?
za flag

This is a fresh install of Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS with Mate desktop and good hardware with plenty of drive space.

I've turned process accounting on with /usr/sbin/accton on soon after boot and nothing is getting logged.

As root:

ls -l /var/log/account/pacct

yields this:

-rw-r----- 1 root adm 0 Jun 26 07:37 /var/log/account/pacct

The 5.8 kernel has CONFIG_BSD_PROCESS_ACCT turned on in /boot/config*

C program created many proccesses, crash the OS and stuffed 40GB into log directory
pl flag

I create the following program which needs to "play ping pong" between a parent process and its child process.

Even while working on it, while compiling, I noticed that my PC starts to work harder and harder but I didn't really think it's a problem.

In the end I found myself crashing my Linux, creating lots of different processes that slow down the PC and also create a lot temp/logs file and cause m ...

Can I prevent a mouse drag from unmaximizing a window?
in flag

Ubuntu 20.04

I often drag the titlebar or scrollbar of a maximized window by mistake, causing it to unmaximize and get repositioned.

I have disabled "Edge Tiling" in Gnome Tweaks, and this is useful in preventing the opposite behaviour (auto-maximized windows). But how can I prevent windows being unmaximized by a mouse drag?

Recently, I upgrade my 18.04 laptop to 20.04 and during the process it complained that it cannot connect to api.snapcraft.io. I thought this might be fixed after the upgrade but it wasn't. So, I started debugging snap and enabled debug mode in snap and run:

sudo journalctl -f -u snapd

the result is this.

when I run:

sudo snap install notes

Xubuntu 20.04 Thunar - automounting of removable media to a different mount point

this will seem similar to other questions but I need something specific that the other answers narrowly avoided covering.

In Thunar (v1.8.14), there is an option to:- Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Configure the Management of Removable Drives and Media (Which I think brings up the same interface as "Removable Drives and Media" in the Whisker Menu)

How to tell Compiz not to manage/manipulate a specifc Window ID
in flag

I have a window I move from one monitor to another in steps. The Compiz "Place Window" plug-in intercepts the movements and initially stops it from moving to the next monitor. Then it jumps to the next monitor and freezes. Then it continues the last few steps.

To override the "place window" plugin python issues some CLI commands. Note: $ and extra lines added for readability:

I've searched around on this for months every now and then, including here, to no avail. My issue seems so exotic I even seem unable to use the right set of keywords in forums and communities. That's why I've finally registered and am hoping somebody can give me a hand or a hint... either for a solution or for where I've overlooked what I need for months...

I upgraded from Kubuntu 18.04 to 20.04. Now the Dropbox icon keeps switching between "network folder" and "box with circular arrows" as if a lot were going up and down, but actually nothing is coming down or going up (I'm comparing with the files on the web interface and my phone with Dropbox).

How can I solve the routing problem when using an industrial camera?
in flag

I use an industrial camera. I also have access to the modem. The problem is that if the Internet comes up first and then the program has access to the camera, then the camera gives an error and has no image. If the program has access to the camera first and the Internet comes up after a while, the camera does not have any error and gives frames correctly. How can I solve this routing problem?

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
