LXD Bridge Prevents Network Access
dj flag

Explanation before the question

I am trying to configure LXD on a raspberry pi using Ubuntu Core 20.04. It's local IP is initialized as 192.168.2.64. Before I run lxd init it was connecting to network without problem. Towards the configuration process, I created a network bridge with address 192.168.2.33/27, which should allow the range 192.168.2.33-62 to containers. However, after saving the configu ...

So, I just installed Ubuntu and find out my second display is not working. My graphics are Intel HD and NVIDIA 1050 and I'm using 1050. I'm using HDMI port on-board and I think that's probably caused by it. Port may be getting output from Intel HD and I'm using 1050. I have latest 460 drivers. How can I solve it?

This wasn't happening before, i was using two monitors just fine.

bitcoind.service: Can't open PID file /run/bitcoind/bitcoind.pid (yet?) after start: Operation not permitted

On Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, I made a service / systemd unit for bitcoind, but when I start it, I get this error:

Can't open PID file /run/bitcoind/bitcoind.pid (yet?) after start: Operation not permitted

Which sounds like a permission issue(?), but my understanding is that the PID file and/or folder containing it is kind of ephemeral, like only appearing while the service is running, and so how would yo ...

Ubuntu-20.4 runs my long text-processing scripts OK, but then System Monitor freezes and cannot be closed ... reinstall?

My main purpose in learning to use Ubuntu-20.4 is to run long scripts involving nmap and long text files. Trisquel_9 is my preferred operating system, as it has eliminated all the proprietary quirks, but it freezes randomly, prolonging those already long-running scripts.

Ubuntu handles the scripts OK, but the system monitor freezes at or near their completion. The good news is that the scripts go ...

How to backup a bare-metal Ubuntu server with MySQL running 24/7 with zero downtime?
ru flag

I've been researching this for a long time but I cannot find a satisfying solution. People tend to:

  1. Backup Linux systems with rsync - which is good if you want to backup a lot of standalone files but not if you want to backup and eventually restore and entire bare-metal server. Additionally, my MySQL databases have 100GB+ in size and are open 24/7 so there isn't any consistent state other than a point-in ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
