Why is Xubuntu/Ubuntu 20.04 constantly writing to disk at a rate of 1G/day?
cn flag

I have my Xubuntu 20.04 installed on a 2T SSD. This computer was purchased in October 2020, and is just over a year old. It is lightly used. I do not run firefox/chrome browsers on it because browsers are notoriously known for writing megabytes to disk every 15 seconds.

To my surprise, my 2T SSD already has 353G data written already. This is about 1G/day for sitting idle and not doing anything.

Gnome Boxes, why does the Next button not appear when creating a VM?
br flag

I've used VirtualBox in the past, but I'm trying to migrate to Linux-native applications as much as possible. My host system is running Ubuntu 21.10, and I have installed Gnome Boxes 40.3.

I want to add a Windows 10 guest VM. I have my Win10 USB stick, and I have created an ISO from it two different ways while trying to solve my problem.

Using Gnome Disks, I can create a partition image from my Wi ...

Why do I need to move the mouse in order to scroll after I switch windows with alt-tab?
ke flag

I'm using Ubuntu 21.10 with the default Gnome 40 based desktop environment and Wayland display server, and I've noticed that, if I switch windows with Alt-Tab, I have to move the mouse cursor before I can scroll the window with the scroll wheel. This problem occurs when I have to hit Alt-Tab more than once to switch to the window in question.

So for example, let's say I have Chrome, Gnome Termina ...

I've already added sshd: ALL in WSL and restart ssh service. But I still cannot connect to WSL. What can I do?

Which Android emulators or Android virtual machines run well on Ubuntu 18.04 and 20.04 or later?
cn flag

BlueStacks is a really easy-to-use (and freeware, apparently) Android emulator that runs well on Windows or Mac, but isn't made for Linux.

I was able to get it to run in Ubuntu here by running it inside a Windows 10 virtual machine inside VirtualBox inside Ubuntu 20.04. In other words:

  1. Install the VirtualBox virtual machine inside Ubuntu 20.04.
  2. Install Windows 10 inside VirtualBox.

JBL CSLM20 external Mic not recording audio on Ubuntu 20.04.03LTS desktop
se flag

I recently bought JBL CSLM20 external mic. This mic comes with an ear piece which allows us to hear the audio recorded through mic. Somehow my Ubuntu 20.04.03 LTS desktop is not recording sound from mic. Surprisingly if I talk into the earpiece, sound gets recorded.

Here are snapshots of Pulse Audio Volume Control

I toggled Front Left to 0 that didn't resolve the problem.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
