Ubuntu 21.10 won't suspend when lid closed
in flag

I have a mid-2012 13" Unibody MacBook Pro running Ubuntu Linux 21.10. I typically use this computer to play Minecraft. When I sign in, there are no performance problems, but it refuses to lock when I close the lid. I open the lid back up and, after a few seconds, it goes right back to where I left off. I opened up the settings app and went to Power. It did not show an option for suspending on lid close. ...

Logout/exit from 'su takes > 1 minute

If I 'su root' or 'su <other_user>' from my user login account and then logout (or exit), it takes about 1 minute for the logout to complete and return me to my user shell. During that minute the process 'su <other_user>' is using 100% of CPU. I can logout a little faster if I ctrl-c a few times (which presumably interrupts whatever is running on exit/logout).

This occurs even if I ha ...

Installing Nvidia Driver Fails

I have an older computer that was running Ubuntu 16.04. Whatever default video driver was installed worked with my video adapter. When I upgraded to 20.04 only the xfce desktop displays properly. I normally use Gnome.

My graphics card is older:

How to improve GNOME performance?
cn flag

I am running Ubuntu 20.04, and I have been increasingly noticing poor performance. Even as I type out this question, there are periods of a second or two where input essentially freezes. There's constantly at least a 1 second delay to every click I make, and in general I am noticing poor FPS for animations and such.

My computer is no slouch either, I am running an Intel i7 10700KF and a GTX 970,  ...

Ubuntu 20.04.3 hangs on boot after upgrade to 5.13 kernel

Following the recent upgrade to kernel 5.13.0-28-generic my system still cannot boot without 'nomodeset'. I have included the output from journalctl in hopes somebody can help me. I'm using the onboard Intel WiFi and graphics hardware. My system has the iwlwifi problem which I work around with

Terrible dual monitor desktop performance with Intel Iris Xe on Ubuntu 20.04
jp flag

Using the standard desktop environment, with or without Wayland, the performance is terrible when using two monitors. Interestingly, watching 4k@24hz video on the second monitor is no problem at all, but GNOME is really laggy. But simple things like scrolling in a GTK window, or moving it, lags intolerably. It works fine on Windows.

I'm not sure what information would be useful to troubleshoot th ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
