VERY lengthy boot time after updating...relates with 'Create Volatile Files and Directories' and /TMP, perhaps?
in flag

All was well until a recent updating session for 20.04.3 demanded a reboot. Wow - it seemed to be sitting idle, but pressing esc to get details revealed: "A start job is running for Create Volatile Files and Directories."

Searching using variations of those terms brought references to /TMP as well as SWAP. Further refinements of my searching all seemed to point to clearing /TMP with no apps opene ...

The speakers and internal microphone on my laptop stopped working.

When I run pavucontrol-qt (Volume Control), Speakers are unavailable as a port on the Output Devices tab. Similarly, the Internal Microphone is "unplugged" as a port on the Input Devices tab under Built-in Audio Analog Stereo. Instead the Output Devices port is "Headphones (plugged in)" and the Input Devices port is "Microphone (plugg ...

Typed a wrong password for remote disk decryption
jp flag

I have been using remote disk decryption using dropbear and initramfs on Ubuntu. A few minutes ago, I rebooted my server and typed the following commands to enter the disk encryption passphrase remotely:

eval $(ssh-agent -s)
ssh-add .ssh/private_key
ssh -p 2223 root@my_server

I was then prompted to enter the password but I accidentally typed a wrong password. Then it showed a message that the password ...

I have two potent batteries in my laptop

The power settings presents it like this Battery 1: 100%, Battery 2: 100% Total Battery 71%.

Odd percentage additions

How should I understand these percentages? I didn't crop just to show the gs app shows the same percentage.

ArcGIS LicenseManager for Linux installer cannot run in this UI mode

I hope someone can help. I think the issue is with 32-bit packages that are missing, but I can't figure out which ones.

I'm trying to install ArcGIS Licence Manager (which came with ArcGIS 10.8.1 for Linux) on Ubuntu 20.04. When I run the setup I get:

Turn encrypted ssd external drive into a regular one
cn flag

I want to buy an external ssd for photo and files storage. I see interesting offers, but most external ssd's with good reviews are encrypted. As I understand, encryption software works on Mac and Windows.

I was wondering if such hard drives can be used under Ubuntu? I don't really care about encryption, since I want to use the drive for storage and everything should be accessible right away.

I'm trying to run a python script that uses Selenium to scrap a website on Startup.

After adding @reboot /Desktop/script.py to the crontab however (using crontab -e), it seems the script only works when the console is on, and since it opens the script without the console on, the script crashes.

Any ideas on how to fix that? Thanks in advance!

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
