I'm trying to autoinstall Ubuntu Server 20.04 (details below) with packer to create a Vagrant box. But I am getting stuck at installing build-essential, the shell exiting with status 100. The traceback is in the this picture.

It seems I don't have internet altogether.

The configuration I am using is: ubuntu2004.pkr.hcl:

Ubuntu vs Ubuntu Mate
in flag

I lately installed Ubuntu 20.04, and according to an answer about gnome Flashback I installed ubuntu mate.

I wonder what benefits does it give, I work with it a couple of weeks and still don't see a lot of change (except of visual interface).

Can somebody please clarify the difference?

BTW, I installed Ubuntu 20.04 and then ubuntu-mate-desktop, is it correct? Or there is an independent version of ubuntu ...

Boot Ubuntu 21.10 on Raspberry Pi 400 from external SSD
cn flag

I'm trying to boot Ubuntu on my Raspberry Pi 400 from a Kingston 240GB external SSD. I've upgraded firmware in Raspberry Pi 400 to the recent one which allows booting from USB, removed the SD card, downloaded the Ubuntu 21.10 image from ubuntu.com and written it to the external SSD on another Ubuntu system with dd. The Ubuntu website says 21.10 should boot this way (while 20.04 doesn't support this,  ...

I'm trying to get a touchscreen in my old CF-18 working properly with the standard libinput driver, but fail so far. Is there anybody who did something similar or understand well this part of the system (i.e. kernel, serial ports and libinput configs) in Ubuntu-32 bit 18.04.6 LTS with kernel 5.4.0-91-generic.

The problem, as I see it, is with LBPS/2 Fujitsu Lifebook TouchScreen. You know, it is  ...

What is the size of Gnome's top bar?
mx flag

In order to run windowed programs at the maximum possible size I can set their resolution to the resolution of my monitor, but then there are several pixels off-screen below the window because the window is positioned below the Gnome Top Bar.

If I knew the size of the top-bar I could account for that, is there a way to find out what size it is exactly?

Do any of the apt-get update/upgrade/dist-upgrade commands change any of the customized conf files?
cn flag

It appears to me that a standard Ubuntu 20.04 distribution needs to be updated very regularly to protect the Apache server from hacking.

As I understand it, there are several commands to do this. Each one has a dated pedigree driving its usage.

From the Ubuntu manuals:

  • apt update "...is used to resynchronize the package index files from their sources."
  • apt upgrade "...is used to install the newest ver ...

Ubuntu Core & Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W
bg flag

I'm trying to run Ubuntu Core 20 on Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W.

According to Install Ubuntu on RPi this should work without a problem when using the 32bit version. Or with 64bit version using following procedure Ubuntu Server support for Zero 2 W.

I tried both options but my RPi Zero 2 W refuses to bootup -> according to LED code 7x blinks this means it's unable to find kernel.img.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
