Kubuntu 20.04 not resolving .local names any more all of a sudden
br flag

Until some days ago, my Kubuntu 20.04 system could resolve .local device names on my local network without problems, as other Linux systems still do (on the same network).

However, all of a sudden this stopped to work. If I type ping otherpc.local (being otherpc the name of another system in my local network) I get otherpc.local: name or service unknown. Samba connections, mount points, etc. all s ...

is there a command to convert svg to stl?

Im doing some 3d modeling, and Ive been using inkscape to create 2D models, then importing them into openSCAD via a kinda superfluous method of uploading the svg files to tinkercad, downloading the file as an stl, then importing that into OpenSCAD. I searched things like svg2stl,and some keywords in synaptic, but I didn't find anything. is there a package that provides this functionality? CLI is fine, i ...

Converting multiple WebMs to MP4
in flag

So, I've been researching how to convert all WebM videos to MP4 in a directory. I've looked for about half an hour for results, but unfortunately, Google isn't being my best friend. I found a simple command using ffmpeg to convert a WebM to MP4 in the terminal:

ffmpeg -i video.webm video.mp4

This is useful, but I don't want to do this several times when I have 30+ of these in the same directory.  ...

How to change default applications: Doc Viewer to Okular
tk flag

I'm on latest 21.10 (Wayland default, Gnome 40.4.0) and have the default "Document Viewer" (Evince?) for viewing pdfs. I'm having trouble with it hanging when I have too many open. So I'd like to change the default pdf viewer to be Okular without having to go to the file manager and choose it in Preferences each time. After lots of searching around, I've got nowhere. How do you actually do this in U21.1 ...

Best Practices for persisting nftables rules
in flag

I'm new to Ubuntu having moved from hosting on CentOS7 which was using iptables and I was comfortable with how apf and bfd handled (hid) iptables from me.. and it was working well

So, I've moved to Ubuntu (20.04 LSR) and the "ubuntu-way" to do firewall with auto banning attempts to break in appears to be nftables and fail2ban

I used iRedMail to set up a basic nginx, postfix, dovecot, clamav, roundcu ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
