How to manage multiple Ubuntu servers with UEFI PXE boot?
sa flag

Coming from a legacy boot background, I used to be able to provide server-specific kickstart/boot configs based on the MAC address by creating a /pxelinux.cfg/01-MAC-Address file. I am trying to do something similar with UEFI boot and can't work out how to get a server to use it's specific configuration (i.e. a particular ISO or user-data file as specified in grub.cfg).

I have set up a PXE/TFTP/Apach ...

Ext4 fast_commit feature
cn flag

Since 5.10 kernel there is a new feature called fast_commit. In arch wiki https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/ext4 you can read that it can be enabled in existing filesystem with:

tune2fs -O fast_commit /dev/drivepartition

but in https://lwn.net/Articles/842385/ there is:

Fast commits are activated at filesystem creation time, so users will have to recreate their filesystems to use this feature.

External DAC audio issues
cn flag

I have scoured the forums looking for a solution to this and found nothing to work. Two things are happening:

  1. When I plug in my DAC via USB connection there is an audible buzzing coming from the motherboard, and also the volume seems to be quiet and thus necessitates over-amplification, which is fine but not exactly ideal since even max is still not great. This does not happen in Windows...

Limit CPU and Memory using cgroup in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS server edition
in flag

I have 3 groups in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS server which is group1, group2, group3. I would like to limit CPU and memory for each groups.

  1. Group1 only allowed to use 20% CPU and 10GB RAM
  2. Group2 only allowed to use 30% CPU and 15GB RAM
  3. Group3 only allowed to use 50% CPU and 20GB RAM

Is this possible by using systemd and cgroup in 20.04 LTS server edition? Or is there any other method?

Boot HP Probook 6560b with ubuntu?
fi flag

i got a HP Probook 5650 that I am desperately trying to install Ubuntu on with a USB. No matter what I do it, it still boots into the windows OS installed (which I don't have access to).

I've been in the boot options and change the order/priority of boot devices, so that USB hard drive, USB floppy and USB CD/DVD are on top. I made sure the option for booting from USB is active/ticked in the bios  ...

Ubuntu 20.04 has recently started to use swap very aggressively
mx flag

I use Ubuntu 20.04 with 16 GB RAM and a swappiness setting of 10. This has worked well in the past, but sometime during the last month I feel there has been a huge shift in the way memory is handled. Recently the machine has started using swap very aggressively if left unused for a while, even if there is plenty of space left in RAM. The result is that if I leave the machine overnight with a few program ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
