Login problem after upgrading to Ubuntu 21.10 - suspect keyboard
cn flag

I have just upgraded to Ubuntu 21.10 (Impish) When I tried to log in via gnome, my usual username/password wasn't recognised. I then did Ctr Alt F1 (or F3? - I can't remember) and was able to access a terminal login screen. It seemed that some characters typed at the keyboards were not being echoed correctly to the screen - for instance 'g' would appear as something like 'g[[' . However, I was able to l ...

Can't install WineHQ on Ubuntu: doesn't support architecture '1386'
th flag

I'm using 64-bit Ubuntu, and trying to install WineHQ using the instructions on https://wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu . I first tried it on Ubuntu 18.04.6 LTS and then again after upgrading to Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS. The results are the same regardless.

The first step is ensure that 32-bit architecture is enabled, and it seems it is. Next step is to download and add the repository key. So far so good.

How do I set alacritty with working-directory option as default terminal in Xubuntu?
jp flag

I'm setting up Xubuntu (so I'm using the default Desktop Environment xfce) and just changed my default terminal to alacritty by modifying the terminal utility in the "Default Applications" tool.

That worked fine apart from one thing: When I start Alacritty for example from desktop right-click "Open Terminal here", it's started with working directory set to ~/Desktop, I would like for this to be just

Alt+TAB, mulitple rows
us flag

I like to use alt-Tab to switch between my numerous openened windows.

When I have too many windows opened, I don't see all of them at once. I would like the alt+tab menu to display my openened app over multiple rows so I can see all of them at once, like it's done on window. This can be also interpreted as line wraping for the alt+Tab menu

Screen goes completely black with white underscore
mt flag

The problem appeared recently and I don't know how to pinpoint the cause of it. The screen will go completely black with a white underscore at the top left hand corner. This problem occurs a few times per hour.

The applications seem to still be running in the background, as I can still hear people and they can still see me if I am in a conference call. I can also login to another TTY by pressing  ...

Cursor moving erratically after coming back from suspend mode
in flag

I recently installed Ubuntu on my laptop. Previously I had Windows and this issue didn't occur there.

Everytime I come back from suspend mode, the cursor moves erratically and clicks happen all the time. I must fully restart my computer in order for this behavior to stop.

I have a touchpad, and I don't wish to disable with xinput because it's the only "mouse" I use on this laptop.

How do I upgrade my python installation, and pip?

On my Ubuntu server, Python 3.8 and 2-something is installed.

I want to upgrade to Python 3.10, and I installed it from a ppa. But 3.8 is still installed, and pip --version shows pip 20.0.2 from /usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/pip (python 3.8)

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
