Using AltGr + Home/PgUp/PgDown etc. for media keys (US International with AltGr Dead Keys)
jp flag

For a while I have been using the CODE keyboard shortcuts in which you use the Fn key combined with Insert/Home/PgUp/Delete/End/PgDn in order to control media functions. I would like to do something similar with my old Model M (no media keys, no Meta key, no fancy things to configure).

My initial idea was to use AltGr for those shortcuts. I quickly realized that the Gnome Keyboard Shortcuts don't like A ...

What is the combination rule of priority among certain apt repositories?

Many use a ppa repository to install a certain featured package. Is it possible to tell apt only to install that certain package (perhaps with dependencies too) from that ppa, whereas to choose the system-wide repository over the ppa repository when installing any other package?

To make it more specific, a preference file specifying the priority of certain repository can be like:

How use specific commands
jo flag

I'm trying to install VMware. But because of some difficulties, I followed a tutorial which lists some commands to resolve my problems. I see this commands:

$ sudo apt update && sudo apt install -y linux-headers-$(uname -r) linux-modules-$(uname -r)

but I don't know how to use it. Should I replace uname -r by my username? I tried many ways but nothing works well.

How to know that the chrony works well to synchronize timestamps on two computers?
ru flag

I used the chrony to synchronize timestamps on two computers.

The robot's computer is a master and the workstation's computer is a client.

All I did, I follow the question's answer here after installing the chorny for both computers using

apt-get install chrony

After that I used this command to measure the latency as this did

ntpdate -q 192.168.xx

. The output was:

Cannot set CUPS username in Kubuntu 20.04

I need to set a specific username for printing (network printer at work).

In Kubuntu 16.04, I used to be able to set it using the CUPS interface at http://localhost:631 (via Administration, Manage Printers, Set Default Options, Job Log, UserId). However, in Kubuntu 20.04, it is not working.

I tried to set User myname in /etc/cups/cups-files.conf, but when I do that and do sudo service cups restart ...

Ubuntu 21.04. How to update Timeshift?
in flag

I’ve got Timeshift 20.11.1 installed. The latest version of Timeshift is 21.09.1. How do I update Timeshift to the latest version? Seems my Timeshift is not updated as part of Ubuntu Software Center updates.

I went to the Timeshift github https://github.com/teejee2008/timeshift but don’t see any deb files for 21.09.1; I only see source code files. How to update my Timeshift to 21.09.1? Thanks.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
