Previously I was running Kubuntu 20.04 (and many versions before that) and I've had center roller mouse scrolling across 6 virtual desktops working for literally years. Yesterday I upgraded to 21.04 and it no longer works. I've been diving through System Settings looking for the control but cannot find it.

Where is the setting that tells the desktop to look in ~/.local/share?
ph flag

I had some issues and tried to reset my Ubuntu desktop back to defaults, but the results were poor. After comparing all the settings side by side with a fresh Ubuntu install, I got it back to about 95%, but one issue still lingers...my custom .desktop files aren't appearing in the applications view. When I bring it up I see the icons that got installed system-wide, but the ones in ~/.local/share/appli ...

Does Ubuntu Like my PC's Drivers?
cn flag

I don't know much about Ubuntu other than it's Linux and I'm fed up with Microsoft (I'm currently running windows). So I don't know weather Ubuntu works with my PC drivers.

Here they are:
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB as my display
8 Core Intel CPU i7-4770 @ 3.4GHz
Those are all I can find that I feel would make an impact.

Ubuntu requires a reboot way too often

The automatic updates ask me to reboot my Ubuntu at least twice a week. Sometimes I postpone the reboot for a few days, then I reboot it, the system installs new updates and asks for a reboot immediately after.

I haven't been checking what exactly needs restarting. I noticed that the system firmware is updated fairly often, perhaps too often for a firmware, but that still only accounts for a mino ...

Ubuntu runs slowly on i3-7130U
th flag

I have a computer with Intel Core i3-7130U (Kaby Lake) CPU and Intel HD Graphics 620 integrated GPU.

For an unfathomable reason, any Linux distro I run, including the wonderful Ubuntu 21.10 or 20.04, runs slowly. It’s sluggish overall. Things like animations lag. Everything takes an extra second to happen. When I try to select text, it takes a second or two before the highlighting appears. It†...

Kernel Module Development on an Ubuntu VM

I am trying to get into kernel module development.
I set up an Ubuntu 20.04.3 64-bit VMWare machine, tried loading a small module, and found it it has to be signed.

I found out that it can be turned off via UEFI variables - but the VM runs with BIOS, not UEFI.
I cannot sign the modules either, because that requires UEFI too.

Is there any nice solution that I missed? I can always compile the kernel mys ...

Does Linux (Ubuntu) have a tool to handle a full gene test result like a CRAM file?

I am downloading a 50Gb CRAM file and it's associated index file. Rather than go online all the time to the tester front end , is there a program for Linux that can handle it. Ditto for ancestry results.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
