Renaming GRUB Entries - Grub Customizer Does Not Rename
my flag

I have installed two Ubuntu 20.04 OSes in two different partitions of an SSD in my computer. For ease of use though I want to rename all the GRUB entries.

I initially used the Grub Customizer, but although in the GUI the changes seemed to have taken place, when I restarted they had not. Meanwhile, in the Grub Customizer the changes keep appearing.

My first question is why Grub Customizer does not se ...

Ubuntu 20.04 shutdown problem (no full shutdown, black screen freeze)
us flag

During shutdown using the gnome button (Power Off / Log Out in the upper right corner) my brand new Lenovo X1 Carbon won't power off properly. The power button LED switches off, the laptop appears to be powered off, but it isn't. Some keyboard key LEDs are still on (i.e. FnLock when it was switched on when I initiate shutdown).

The funny part: shutdown now on the terminal works fine.

Using second USB keyboard directly from C without OS
us flag

I have two USB keyboards.

At the moment, the input from both keyboards is merged together.

How can I stop the second keyboard from being captured by the OS and use it in my own C program?

(I'm assuming some form of udev configuration, but I'm not sure where to start.)

How would I use a non-OS keyboard from within C? (I'm fine with raw scan codes, or even HID messages at worst.)

Alternatives to openjdk-7-jre?
us flag

Trying to build headless serv for minecraft w/ friends. I'm following a guide that wants me to install openjdk-7-jre, however I noticed that people are saying it doesn't have updates anymore and to not use it. I want to know is there an alternative to that? or do I just have to have it?

Thanks.

Problem while installing Android Studio
gb flag

I had once installed android studio once and while it was updating the files got corrupt and I was getting a message to install it from scratch. So first I went to /usr/local/ and deleted the directory android-studio (Probably my biggest mistake) then I extracted android-studio-2020.3.1.25-linux.tar.gz in /usr/local/ from after that for some reason I am not able to access it without going as root. ...

How to build gcc-mips-linux-gnu from source
jp flag

I've been using the gcc-mips-linux-gnu package, and now I want to make a small modification to the compiler. How can I build the exact same package locally?

I already tried using apt-get source based on this answer, but that does not retrieve the gcc source. The "source" retrieved is just a few shell scripts. Running

dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -uc -us -b

Crackling noise with Guitarix and Jack
gh flag

I'm connecting my guitar to my Asus TUF FX505G laptop using a Fender Mustang Micro amp and a USB C cable. The Micro is set to the Studio Preamp setting.

Jack and Guitarix get a signal from the Micro, but it's crackling and distorted and doesn't sound anything like a guitar tone. I've tried tweaking the Frames/Period, Periods/Buffer settings in QjackCtl, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

Is discord compatible with Ubuntu 21.10?
in flag

Whenever I try updating to ubuntu 21.10, the updater says it will uninstall discord. Has anyone else had this problem, and is there a solution, or am I stuck on 21.04 until this issue gets fixed?

EDIT: reinstalling discord isn't a problem, I'm just concerned it might be uninstalling due to being incompatible with 21.10, although I could be wrong?

How to create another partition for storing data?
au flag

I've been a windows user since 2010 and I started using Linux as the host OS 3 months, so far so good. I was just wondering if there is a way of creating a partition that is not under the root partition in Linux. Like in windows, if say Local Disk C was to corrupt and you had to reinstall the Windows again, the data in the other partition would still be safe. How can you do about that in Linux?

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
