How can I change SSH password without root access when the passwd command isn't working?

xir

I'm pretty Unix illiterate, so I apologize if this is an ill-founded question. I have SSH access to a server with a password which I know, but I'd like to change it. When I use the passwd command, however, I get a passwd: Authentication token manipulation error even when I'm certain I typed in the correct current password. I looked around at ways to fix this, but they all seem to require root-leve ...

21.10 Show Applications Button
za flag

I just upgraded Ubuntu 21.04 to 21.10 and have several issues. This one has to do with the application icon on the dock launcher at the bottom of the window. I may get the exact words wrong. The first button on the bottom left of the bar consists of a 3x3 pattern of little squares. When I hover over it, the tip says "show applications". I expect when I click on it to see a grid of icons for all of the a ...

How do I tell if my Ubuntu Desktop/Server is set to auto-shutdown after a certain amount of time?
cn flag

Is there some kind of info or flag stored on the system anywhere that could tell me whether my server will auto-shutdown itself after a certain period of time has passed? Maybe some kind of command within systemd? I'd like to know specifically in the case of a system that doesn't have a GUI running. It doesn't have to apply only to Ubuntu Server, it could also apply to the "desktop" variant of Ubuntu th ...

I'm trying to get pam_mkhomedir.so to create an LDAP user's local home directory upon initial login. I'm on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.

Currently, users are added to my server via LDAP (Active Directory backend). This has been configured with nslcd + nscd. I followed this guide here to get everything configured: https://www.markturner.net/2019/09/27/ad-ldap-authentication-on-linux-hosts/

I upgraded 21.04 to 21.10 and have a couple of issues which I'll separate out. The first is Firefox will not launch. Or rather it does, but only to give the error

There doesn't seem to be any way around the error message. I had Firefox running successfully under 21.04 before the upgrade.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
