Problems getting a working installation of gsl 2.6
za flag

I need to run some physics software on my laptop, which is very finicky, so I specifically need to use gsl 2.6 (where I normally run I have found this through trial and error).

I run ubuntu-18.04. I had gsl 2.4 installed but could not get it to update further than that. So I went to the gnu website and downloaded 2.7 in the hopes that it would do. I followed the instructions here: https://coral.ise.l ...

Netplan and Ipsec - tell netplan to leave interface alone?
pl flag

I'm trying to use Strongswan to create an Ipsec tunnel on a server with Netplan. Netplan has currently no configuration for the tunnel1 and tunnel2 interfaces that Ipsec brings up when the tunnels are created. This seems (almost) correct to me.

The ipsec services run a script which creates the tunnel[1,2] interfaces (these could possibly called vti[1,2] if needs be). If a tunnel fails, ipsec will "down"  ...

Is there a way to "reset" idle time when unplugging laptop?
gy flag

I have my laptop set to never suspend when plugged in, and to suspend after a period of time when on battery; this is the way I'd like to keep it.

I regularly switch between using my laptop and desktop, so sometimes my laptop sits plugged in but unused for a period of time. If I intend to use the laptop at my workbench that's no problem, but sometimes I want to unplug the laptop and take it with  ...

Ubuntu 20.04 hangs even if nomodeset?
au flag

I haven't been using my Ubuntu partition in like two weeks. Coming back to it I do as per usual a package upgrade which, if I remember correctly may have been included some new nvidia packages too. After rebooting, the system completely hangs after the new boot.

What I've already tried with no success:

Bad audio even after modifying daemon.conf
bd flag

I just started to use Ubuntu. Everything is good except for the audio. It sounds like it's coming out of a tin can. So, I Googled how to fix it, an AskUbuntu thread suggested modifying the daemon.conf file.

I tried doing that but it didn't work. Is there any other way to fix it?

How do I force Windows mode for a Bluetooth keyboard connection?
cn flag

Many hybrid (PC/Mac or Windows/MacOS) Bluetooth keyboards have a physical button (Keychron) or hotkey (Logitech) to switch between Windows- and MacOS-mode.

The Seenda Wireless Backlit Bluetooth Keyboard ISJ-WJK70BT4 has no such hard- or softbutton. It automatically detects Windows and MacOS and changes the button layout accordingly, most famously swapping Win/Option and Alt/Cmd.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
