Intel Open GL being broken with some distros
sx flag

I've tried MANY, many distros at this point. But Ubuntu is by far my favorite. Just vanilla Ubuntu. My main problem is, is that some distros just refuse to work with OpenGL. Minecraft, TF2 and all launch fine, however polygons are invisible/visibly broken. I have provided glxgears, and other such utilities. I don't understand why some distros break this and why some do. Examples of working ones include  ...

Ubuntu Terminal Default Positions
in flag

As many of you know, whenever you open a new terminal window on Ubuntu it gets located in the upper left part of the screen. The next one is located right below it. The third one is in the upper right, the fourth one in the bottom right part of the screen. I want to add that functionality to another Linux distribution which I'm using now. I just want to know how this is handled in Ubuntu.

FreeCAD on Ubuntu - how to rotate/pan?
cn flag

I just installed FreeCAD on Ubuntu 20.04 and opened a .stp file, which seems to be valid.

While attempting to work out how to rotate/pan, I found various pages upon Googleing (for example https://wiki.freecadweb.org/Manual:Navigating_in_the_3D_view) which list the usual suggestions one would expect (some combinations of left mouse button, Ctrl, Alt, Shift, and the Windows key). None of these work.

KeePass XC autotype depends on keyboard layout

I'm changing between German and English keyboard layouts and I use KeePass XC (installed via snap).

When I use the autotype feature to fill in passwords, KeePass XC seems to be "one layer too close to the keyboard", let me explain with an example:

My imaginary password contains the letter z. On the German QWERTZ-layout, the z key is between t and u. Lets assume that I entered the password using the  ...

How to enable Promiscuous Mode permanently on a NIC managed by NetworkManager?

I'm trying to bridge two of several NICs to act like a switching hub.
To do so, need to enable the promiscuous mode on the NICs.
Even if I set it to “promisc on” with the “ip link” command, the setting will be reset when I reboot the PC.

How can I enable Promiscuous Mode permanently, even if I reboot my PC?

What is RC or BBS in last column of efibootmgr -v?
id flag

xubuntu 20.04 command efibootmgr -v has three columns after the BootOrder: line. The third column has either a boot loader entry or "RC" for CD or USB media. My HP laptop has W10 preinstalled with a recovery partition for W10, and of course I have Linux installed on another partition. The third column starts with "HD(foo)" for the W10 boot or Ubuntu boot, and it starts with "BBS HD(foo)" for the W10  ...

Confusion regarding workspace-related shortcuts on 20.04

The problem

I am trying to understand some odd behavior linked to keyboard shortcuts, specifically around workspaces.

The shortcut list in setting says that:

  • Shift+Super+Page-up/down moves the current window to another workspace
  • Super+Page-up/down moves me to another workspace

But I can emulate the same behaviors by using:

  • Ctrl+Alt+Shift+up/down arrow to move windows

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
