Help installing Ubuntu on external ssd without dual boot
gd flag

I want to install Ubuntu on an external ssd that is plugged in through usb. I read about a bug that installs the boot on the windows 10 drive and I dont want that. I want to boot into Ubuntu when the external ssd is connected and into Windows when its disconnected. I read about some ways to work around this, but I am not sure which way that will be best.

Thanks, Jimmy

Move Linux installation to another machine (UEFI)
by flag

I'm using a UEFI installation of Ubuntu 21.04. I have to change my laptop to another one with very similar configuration. I do not want to reinstall the OS because it may be time consuming to set everything up even if I copy the home dir. Back in the BIOS/MBR times I used to just make an image of the HDD or move the HDD physically to another machine and it was fine. I wonder if this is possible with UEF ...

A few days back I was trying to build wxWidgets-3.15 library on Ubuntu 21.04 with multiple flags enabled. I've had some issues with the build so I made a ticket on that on stackoverflow.

Unfortunately, not only I didn't manage to build the library after all, but it seems that in the process I messed up something regarding the GStreamer library. Specifically, the module libgstvideo-1.0.so.0 of the p ...

I can see the data files I want to save to an external hard drive so that I can uninstall Ubuntu and re-install Ubuntu. But when I try to copy these data files it talks about permissions.

Is there no simple way to recover the data and re-install Ubuntu. I am tiered of trying things. I would rather just uninstall and re-install

Which desktop environment will let me jump to the next file with the same first letter in filename, when I press a key few times with delay

I am pretty annoyed with this on Gnome that when you hit a key few times you end up typing a word in the search bar instead of jumping to the next search result.

Are there some other DE that do it like Windows? It is far more convenient way to find something quick imo. Why this is impossible on Ubuntu?

Here is the demonstration in total commander

Wifi not always working dual boot Ubuntu 20.04, Win10

Dell 7480, new to Linux. I installed Ubuntu 20.04 along side Win10 and it seems to work except for the Wifi in Ubuntu. Secure boot and Fast startup are disabled.

I thought it was only problem when I did a 'restart' instead of a 'shutdown' from Windows (where Wifi always works), but that isn't the case anymore. It worked for a while though, so I've used Wifi in Ubuntu many times. It also worked fi ...

Files on ssd frequently get corrupted
in flag

On my second SSD, files frequently get corrupted. I usually store a lot of images files, and read them frequently (for machine learning tasks). But very frequently, single files become corrupted, and I cannot read them anylonger.

I have no issues on my main ssd, only on my secondary ssd. I checked temperatures, but they look fine.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
