How do I know if my webcam or mircrophone are in use?
mx flag

In effort to avoid having to tape my microphone and camera on my laptop. I'd like to either write a script that alerts me if it's in use. So I can either say Hi to the user who successfully accessed my camera or microphone.
Or run for the hills.

I tried for example to run

fuser -v /dev/video*

But this returns nothing.

Joe

Running Ubuntu 20.04: When I close an application, I would like it to restart at the same window size and location the next time I start it, whether it is in the same session or several sessions later. It would seem logical for all applications to do that, but I can't figure out how to make it so. I often use applications in the same location on the screen and stacked with edges showing in a way that ma ...

Udev event loop after 21.04
cn flag

a few years ago, I wrote a small utility application for MSI gaming notebooks to control the integrated keyboard's backlight. It is available at GitHub.

Recently, some problems began which are presumably caused by the behavior of udev. Since the keyboard backlight resets after each reboot, I also added a script that creates a udev rule to trigger the program after each reboot. This worked fine so ...

I have installed rEFInd to use on my desktop, which I am dual-booting Ubuntu and Windows 10. In the past, I have simply ran refind-install and refind-mkdefault, and it has worked perfectly.

However, I have recently re-installed and there are now 2 entries for EFI/ubuntu/grubx64.efi detected by rEFInd. So, when it shows the menu there are 2 identical Ubuntu entries. But, the problem is that one of  ...

Unbutu server 20.04 cannot get DHCP address
kz flag

I just installed Ubuntu server 20.04. If I connect to our main network I get a valid IP address from our old SBS 2003 server. When I connect to our research network which uses a Ubuntu 14.04 server for DHCP I get nothing. I tested the research network with several devices and all got valid IP addresses from the Ubuntu server. Any ideas?

Thank You

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
