How to use a more recent version of nautilus on Ubuntu 20.04
pe flag

A bug has been introduced in Nautilus 4 years ago, where opening a multi-selection of files with an app launches N instances of the app, instead of opening the N files in a single instance (previous/desired behaviour).

It was finally fixed 2 months ago: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/-/commit/080f83385ff79a8be54ee31e7a45422138226f1f, a bit before version 40rc.

I have installed a HP Smart Tank 500 on Ubuntu 20.04.

Had this happen a couple times now. Working with Windows 10 and Ubuntu and occasional re-use disk from one machine to the other. Had a working boot disk that suddenly stopped after a couple weeks and when I looked at it in Disks, it showed twice the size and had Windows and Linux partitions neither of which were accessible. The screen shot attached shows the same problem on a different disk. The partit ...

xkbcomp at startup in kde

I'm using kubuntu 20.04 and want to run xkbcomp ~/.Xkeymap $DISPLAY at startup to load a custom keymap. To this end I created a script with the content

#!/bin/bash

touch ~/test
xkbcomp ~/.Xkeymap $DISPLAY

and put it in ~/.config/autostart-scripts. I made it executable, and I see that it's indeed running at startup because the touch command timestamps a file in the home directory. However, the keys are ...

Banshee wont authenticate for LastFM
ar flag

Banshee will not authenticate for LastFM in Bionic. This happens even though I have logged into LastFM successfully and I know this as I can access my LastFM account through Banshee. I have installed and uninstalled or removed Banshee but it didn't reset the login area to LastFM. I am unsure what to try next.

Unable to startx; Unable to reinstall Xorg

I'm running XUbuntu 20.04 and I am unable to get a GUI. Booting to terminal I run startx and I am presented with the following: /etc/X11/xinit/xerverrc: 3: exec: /usr/bin/x: not found. This seems to indicate Xorg is not installed and searching through questions on here reinforces that. Running sudo apt install xorg results in the following:

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
