Thinkpad X1 Carbon (9), suspend works, but unsuspends when I close the lid
et flag

I have a new Thinkpad X1 Carbon, 9th generation, Ubuntu 21.10. Generally it works better than my former 6th gen.

However, when I suspend now (from the UI) (xfce4), it does suspend, apparently; the power light on the keyboard throbs, as does the red light on the back of the screen (the outer laptop cover). But when I close the screen (the "lid") to pack it away, it immediately wakes up. It's like  ...

Macbook Pro 14.1 w/Ubuntu 20.04 LTS won't recognize flash drives
cn flag

I installed Ubuntu 20.04 LTS on a Macbook Pro 14.1 from a flash drive. Once installed, everything worked fine, except now it doesn't recognize there's a flash drive plugged in. I tried several drives including an SSD external drive. The drives work fine on my other laptop with Ubuntu, a Dell. I know at least one is formatted to FAT32, and all are compatible with Ubuntu on other computers.

How to enable Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 Gen3 mixer on Ubuntu Studio 20.04.3
in flag

I have installed Ubuntu Studio 20.04.3 on my Lenovo Thinkpad W520 with success. It appears to work very well, using the included DAWS as well as others. What a fantastic collaborative project!

I would like to control my very popular Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 Gen3 audio interface. Being class compliant, it sorta works, but in order for it to be fully functional, this device needs software control.

Barcode scanner randomly skips numbers after update
pl flag

So I upgraded my work computer from 16.04 to 18.04. It's great!

But now the barcode scanner I use for entering product is skipping numbers, which has never happened before. The scanner was a standard cheapo amazon purchase that says BARCODE on it and came with a bluetooth dongle, but a total workhorse for entering data into a spreadsheet!

Figured it was aging and decided to get a higher end scanner, ...

Cannot utilize full space of Ubuntu Home Partition

32 GB -- root partition. 18 GB -- home partition. 2 GB -- swap.

These are my disk partitions. I cannot use the full capacity of my home partition. I have 18 GB of usable space. I am only using about 8 GB to store my files. The disk usage utility says that I have 2.1 GB free. I am unable to use the rest of the free space. How can I change it so that I can actually use the free space?

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
