EDIT: So after about three hours of trying to get 'netplan try' to work, I tried 'netplan apply' and the setting worked. Yet, 'netplan try' still throws the same error. I am assuming that this is a bug?

Black screen when video players/games cover entire X display in fullscreen on Ubuntu 21.10
pk flag
0n1

I'm using Ubuntu 21.10 and my GPU is an NVIDIA GTX 1070, all drivers are installed and up to date. Whenever I launch a game or video player (such as VLC or mpv) in fullscreen (covering the entire X display), the screen quickly turns black. The games render normally in the Dash to Panel window preview, and every other part of the game works. This only started once I upgraded to 21.10.

Upgraded Ubuntu, Lost Years of Firefox Files
ng flag

Upgraded to Ubuntu 21.10 (from 21.04 I think, didn't write it down). Now years of work, e.g., hundreds of Firefox bookmarks, passwords & logins seem to be gone.

No, I did not use Sync, nor did Ubuntu or Firefox encourage me to use Sync before the upgrade.

Those files must be on my computer, just with a deleted registry. Please, please, please help.

SSD NVME M.2 not detected on Ubuntu 21.10 during installation
cn flag

I'm trying to install Ubuntu on my computer (MSI GS66 Stealth 11UH) but the SSD is not detected. I'm using a bootable key of Ubuntu 21.10. I thought it could be related to SATA mode being RAID instead of AHCI, but there is no such option in the BIOS, so I assume my computer only supports AHCI in the first place. The hardware is fairly recent, maybe it is just not supported properly yet. I had touchpad i ...

Cannot install the original GNOME DE on my PC

A few months ago I really needed a way to arrange icons on my desktop (or something similar, I can't distinctly remember), but I was not able to do it on the original desktop. I searched a little online and somewhere it was written that GNOME desktop supports very limited functionality, and I could consider switching to Cinnamon based desktop while still being in GNOME desktop environment. I did so and  ...

How to mount --bind an unmounted folder on startup?
th flag

I am dual booting Ubuntu 20.04 with Windows 10 pro. I have a bunch of folders that I share with Ubuntu on another drive, I'll just call it driveA. I have configured the driveA to mount on auto startup via the GUI. So I want to add this sudo mount --bind /mnt/driveA/"Share Music" /home/username to /etc/fstab by following this link. Both answers don't work for me.

Here's the line I added to /etc/fstab

Cannot open a VNC screen sharing session when monitor goes to sleep

I am using vino (with the default screen sharing integration in Ubuntu) as a VNC server and vinagre as the client.

I can connect the machine when the screen is awake with no problem. However, any attempt to connect when the screen has gone to sleep mode results in an instant Connection refused error.

Waking up the screen fixes it, but it kinda defeats the concept of remote access =)

How do I change the appearance of the right click menu? Ubuntu 20.04.03

After installing dconf editor I started to tinker in "dash-to-dock" to change the dock position within the dconf editor. I noticed the change in the appearance of right click menu. Earlier it was a black menu with much less spacing between the menu items. However, I can't change it back. Switching themes didn't work. Any help is appreciated.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
