I am having a huge problem accessing my server through VNC as I get "Too many authentication failures" way too often. At first I was solving it by connecting through SSH and restarting the VNC server, but this is not an option anymore because I am training Deep Learning models that can take days to finish, and by restarting the server, the training crashes too. I can configure different display profiles using the xfce4-display-settings command, and I know that I can query which display profile is currently in use with the command

xfconf-query -c displays -p /ActiveProfile

which gives me the ID of the current profile. Is it possible to change the display profile using the command line? I tried

xfconf-query -c displays -p /ActiveProfile -s <PROFILE ID>

mx flag

Recently, my HP ProBook 640 was upgraded to Ubuntu 20.04 coming from 18.04..

I use a hardware DisplayPort/USB KVM Switch (KVM meaning here: keyboard, video, mouse) to switch between computers, as the same monitor/peripherals are shared among several computers.

Since the upgrade to 20.04, the notebook dives immediately into suspension mode when switching away from it to another machine. This was not  ...

"mate-network-properties" won't honor ignored-hosts address
in flag

I want to block a social media address.

When I block it via

  echo "127.0.0.1 facebook.com" | sudo tee -a /etc/hosts > /dev/null

works.

But when I use mate-network-properties gui and add 127.0.0.1 facebook.com into ignored-hosts tab, it ignores the address I added, I mean it doesn't block that address. I also ran mate-network-properties as sudo but nothing's changed.

Unable to print files with links in them. How can I debug what is going on and why printer refuses to work?

I have Brother HL-11 printer that worked fine.

But recently I noticed that I am unable to print files with links in them

I have a big pdf file that could be send to printer with no reaction at all and disappearing from printing queue. Deleting this link caused to get a printable file.

This seems weirdly specific and hope that maybe someone has an idea what is going on.

I believe it was installed through apt before the upgrade.
I have tried to reinstall firefox, and install the beta-track.
I have tried to reboot the computer. It took a while to shut down.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
