Accidentally denied access to my root folder

I have a dual boot windows-ubuntu system. I accidentally denied all access to the root folder and everything went black. I tried booting from a live usb, and modifying back the read and write permissions. However even now, I still can't access my system. It halts after the disk check, and I can't even switch to another TTY. I'm completely locked out of my system. I also hid the grub menu so the recovery ...

kde panel blinks all the time when I move mouse over it fast in kubuntu 20.04
cn flag

When I move my mouse fast it causes the panel to blink (rapidly disappears and appears).

When I move the mouse slowly over panel it does not blink.

Probably this is related to render of window contents.

Does Ubuntu have a command line configuration tool
pr flag

I'm looking for a command line tool to configure Ubuntu 20+. (Firewall, Users, Networking, Services, Hardware.) Just like Suse has Yast, and CentOS has the Setup tool.

I know Ubuntu used to have Ubuntu-tweak, but that has been discontinued, and its successors don't seem to have command line support. And I really don't want to run a gui (gnome/unity/etc).

Is there such a tool available?

Disable log out when turning off the screen

tex

I'm using Ubuntu 21.04 with Fluxbox as my Window Manager. My screen is connected via DisplayPort.

The screen has multiple input ports and I often switch between different connected devices or sometimes turn it off.

Whenever my Ubuntu machine is disconnected from the screen - either by switching to a differen source or turning it off - my graphical session is terminated and I'm logged out.

How can i add an installer to a Cubic project to make my custom distro install itself?
cc flag

I was playing around with Cubic to create my own distro. I used Ubuntu Server as base because it does not come bundled with all the GUI software and installed ubuntu-mate-core to it to have a desktop environment. The iso works perfectly fine, but I am now searching for a way to install this iso to my hard drive from a USB stick via an installer on the system (like a desktop icon or on startup, whatever  ...

Best strategy for pausing apt updates
us flag

I'm running a Postfix/Dovecot stack and I absolutely do not want unattended upgrades (tends to break things). However, I do want to update at some point. I'm thinking of adding packages to /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades. My concern is their dependencies updating, which may break them.

If I blacklist the main packages, their dependencies won't update right?

I was facing a problem with the formatting of the data card Samsung 8 GB in windows as well as in Ubuntu.

So formatting was not possible on either OS.

However later with UBUNTU I used Sudo rm -rf boot ( in media folder of data card ).

The data card is no longer recognized by either Windows or Ubuntu.

I struggled to get some information from the website but no luck yet.

cat : Do not read stdin if no input file is given on the command line
ph flag

I have a script that concatenates files with cat. It contains roughly the following line that hangs the script in reading the standard input if the directory contains no files:

cat /path/to/dir/* > concat.txt

Is there a way to either make cat not read anything from standard input and produce an empty output if no files exist at /path/to/dir/, or use another command to achieve the same?

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
