How do I install an ubuntu package from an older release?
cn flag

I'd like to install libqt5qmlmodels5 from packages.ubuntu.com.
The library exists in [universe] for [groovy] [hirsute] [impish].
I'm on Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS [focal], so apt install doesn't work.

Can I still install the library?

I looked at "Download Source Package", and there are many things there.
Do I copy and paste the files found in the fileslist (where do I get those files from)?

How to wake Ubuntu 20.04 running on external SSD after suspension?
ar flag

I'm running Ubuntu on a SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD. When I suspend it and want to wake it up, it shows a black screen with a cursor looks like this _ blinking on the top left. I suspect that when Ubuntu goes into suspend mode, there isn't power supply to the external SSD, is there a fix?

Bash script to check the group and permision
ug flag

I am relatively new to the bash scripting

  1. I want to achieve a bash script that ensures the file /test/file is owned by the group ‘test’ and has the group read and write permissions.

  2. Update the bash script to allow an optional runtime parameter which ensures that anyone can list the contents of /test but only the owner and group can view and edit the files/directories within.

Integrated webcam is not sending back image
cw flag

Final Update: I ran some hardware tests without booting into the OS and it seems that it's a purely hardware problem (some internal connections may broke off), thus this question is now closed

Whenever I launch cheese (or similar programs), the light on the webcam lights up, but no images were sent back.

My hardware is a Dell Inspiron 14-3442, and software Kubuntu 20.04

Stopping HDD from Sleeping
kp flag

I'm using Ubuntu 21.04

I don't want my HDDs to go idle at all. For the process I'm doing I never want them to sleep. So I have hd-idle installed.

If I run hd-idle -i 0 my understanding is that none of the HDD will go idle. My first question is, is that correct?

Secondly, I want this to be the case even on reboots.

I updated my file here: /etc/default/hd-idle thusly:

There is a way to run an action in klipper showing the terminal?

I'm using Kubuntu 21.04 and I had set the following action in klipper

youtube-dl %s

It works as expected: if I have the direction of a youtube video in the clipboard it download it, however the action happens silently. I want to know if there is a way to show the terminal when calling this action to see the progress of the download.

Ubuntu Freezes unpredictably
cn flag

Ubuntu freezes without any discernible pattern. I could have few apps open or many. It freezes in the middle of a video or when the computer is not in use.

The frequency of the freeze is not regular either. It can happen within minutes of logging on or after hours of work. The only pattern I see is that it happens at least once per hour while I'm working, and happens rarely while idle.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
