Boot shows flashing cursor and then a DRM FIFO error
co flag

So this appears to be an issue with my latest kernel update as if I boot with my older one then all is good.

Latest Kernel Version = 5.11.0-25-generic

Older Stable Version = 5.8.0-63-generic

If I jump into a tty and run startx it asks me to confirm my keychain password.

Looking at the journalctl it looks like this might be why it does not start the gnome session:

How can I install openssh-server without openssh-client on Ubuntu Server 20.04
bo flag

I'm trying to install openssh-server on a Ubuntu server 20.04. When I try to install it with the following command:

sudo apt-get install openssh-server

the process wants to install openssh-client, openssh-sftp-server and ssh-import-id. If I proceed and try to remove openssh-client, openssh-server and the other packages are removed too.

Is there a way to install openssh-server only?

How to "save" GRUB configuration?
iq flag

My laptop with Ubuntu ran out of power. Before that incident I installed the latest updates, I cannot recall if new kernel was a part of the update (not sure it is important).

After that, it only boots to GRUB bootloader. I was able to find help here, so by using these commands:

set root=(hd0,gpt1)
insmod linux
insmod normal
normal

it boots to "unlock partition screen" and then to the proper system. Cool ...

One terminal app; two (Favorites) launch modes

Running Ubuntu 20.04, I wish to have two clickable launch modes for gnome-terminal in the Favorites bar [i.e. in the "Dock"]. For example, I want both the default launch and a bespoke launch. The default launcher was trivial to add to the Favorites bar, using the well-known mechanisms. For the custom launcher, I created the following .desktop file:

Black screen in recovery mode after adding xorg.conf.d file

I’ve looked at a bunch of the existing questions about black screen and I don’t think this is a duplicate.

I have Ubuntu 18.04 installed on a Lenovo P52 ThinkPad.

I followed the instructions in this article to try to fix the screen brightness adjustment (which wasn’t working at all). Running ls /sys/class/backlight yielded nvidia_0. I then ran ls /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d which yielded sev ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
