Recovering partially wiped hard drive
cl flag

I'm using Ubuntu 18.04 and long story short, I accidentally ran a terminal command to write over my hard drive with zeros. It ran for a few seconds before my machine crashed. Now I've been struggling for the past few hours to get my computer back to normal and I'm in pretty deep.

Upon rebooting I found that I could boot into grub rescue mode similar to this. However I found none of my drives and par ...

gnome-control-center segmentation faults when launched

For some weeks now, maybe since upgrading to 21.04 (maybe earlier, not sure), gnome-control-center has been segfaulting every time I try to run it, right at start up. The gnome-control-center package version is 1:3.38.5-1ubuntu1.

Things I've tried:

  • sudo apt update; sudo apt dist-upgrade
  • sudo apt install --reinstall gnome-control-center

Install Windows 10 dual boot on a second SSD without affecting Ubuntu 20.04
kr flag

I've searched a few answers to this but they all seem a little old and with older versions of Ubuntu.

I have Ubuntu 20.04 running from an M.2 NVMe SSD. I've bought a second of the same SSD and would like to install Windows 10 and have it running as dual boot with the option to run Windows on boot (with Ubuntu being the default). I've seen people have removed the Ubuntu SSD and put the fresh one i ...

Install Linux on Magellan GPS
in flag

I have an old Magellan RoadMate 5235T-LM GPS running Windows CE 6.0. The GPS doesn't really work anymore, so I am hoping to revive it by scrubbing Windows CE and installing Ubuntu or some other Linux distro on it. I haven't been able to find anything useful on the internet about how to do this, although I'm sure that it is possible (though not necessarily straightforward). Does anyone happen to know of  ...

This issue has only happened recently, before my setup was great.

I was able to have 2 external monitors and have my laptop closed.

Now when I have the monitors connected and working with my docking station if I close the laptop (b/c i just want to use the 2 external monitors)... everything freezes.

I see the mouse on the monitor sometimes but that is it, everything else is black and not responsive.

How to install the nouveau drivers on Ubuntu 20.04?
fr flag

Because of a bug in nouveaus drivers I switched to nvidia drivers which didn't have that bug. Though now the two newest kernel versions don't boot anymore(just a black screen and a frozen mouse) and I have to revert to the older kernel 5.8.0-59-generic to boot normally. I would like to get the newest kernel version to work and I suspect it's the nvidia drivers responsible for freezing the system. Now wh ...

Initramfs boot stuck
gb flag

I currently encounter the initramfs on boot "error". I tried several hours to recover from it.

At the first place I got the error, /dev/mapper/root does not exist. I got rid of that with this steps:

  1. Boot into a live distro.
  2. cryptsetup open /dev/nvmexxxx - get access to my nvme.
  3. mount the root, usr, tmp, var, dev, sys, proc and boot into /mnt.
  4. chroot /mnt
  5. execute this command update-initramfs -u -k all

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
