Faced problem with ffmpeg+alsa.

Running, for example sudo ffmpeg -f alsa -ac 1 -i hw:1 -t 30 out.wav gives me:

Checking for alsa:

I compiled on config with next setup.

Running ./ffmpeg -formats |grep alsa in ffmpeg dir:

How does a user database compare to integrated user management

Currently I am setting up my first apache webserver in Ubuntu 20.04 on dedicated hardware. Will host <10000 unique user accounts with an approximate max of 200 concurrent users. I plan on using Django.

With no theoretical knowledge of user management, I am wondering if I should use the integrated user system of Ubuntu and play with GID and permissions or keep everything python based and write  ...

Why does LibreOffice Writer remove Bold & underlines after closing the file?
ca flag

I am using LibreOffice Writer on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS to make notes in a standard .odt file format:

File name and type

Lately I notice that when I apply formatting like bold and underline to text:

text bolded and underlined in LibreOffice .odt file

When I save and close the file and then re-open it the formatting is just gone!

LibreOffice file re-opened and formatting gone

I should note this does not happen with text (which saves normally) just my formatting. I don't notice any errors or issues and am unsure how to proc ...

Disable Window Pairing
cn flag

I regularly snap windows to the edges of my screen, so I have two open each of which take up 50% of the space. The problem is, when snapping a window to 50% if there's another window also snapped to 50% on the other side they will end up 'paired' together.

Then, if I want to minimise one of the two windows, it minimises both of them at once. Or if I try to select one of them from the taskbar, it m ...

TL;DR: What do I need to configure so I can resolve a .local hostname on my VM guest as if I was resolving it on my VM host.

Long version: I'm running a VM with Ubuntu 21.04 on my Windows 10 using VMware Workstation (16.1.1 build-17801498). Ubuntu itself is almost vanilla, I've changed next to nothing about the OS/env itself (actually nothing comes to mind right now). Maybe it's noteworthy I upgrade ...

Is it normal for Ubuntu 20.04 to use more memory over time even after all apps (except Stacer) are closed?
co flag

I am running 20.04 LTS and having no functionality issues. But I noticed that after booting and logging in, Stacer reports I am using about 1.5GB of RAM. If I don't launch a lot of apps (or if I launch apps and then close them) a few hours later, Stacer shows that with no other apps loaded, I am using about 8GB of RAM. This hasn't been an issue so far because I have 16GB of RAM installed, but I am wo ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
