Monitoring Mouse and Keyboard Usage
us flag

I am looking for an application to monitor keyboard and mouse usage on Ubuntu.

Keyboard usage could be defined as the difference between the first key press and the last key press. The last key press is when a key is pushed followed by a period of inactivity (e.g. 1 minute of non-usage). Total keyboard usage is therefore the sum of each duration of keyboard usage.

Mouse usage is similarly defined to ...

update-initramfs very slow
jp flag

I used to just happily sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade often; however, just today, I updated and found the update was hanging for a long time at updating the kernel, specifically at update-initramfs.

The slowdown has been dramatic. It used to take a minute at most to install. Now it can take upwards of an hour or longer. What could be causing this?

I was running Ubuntu 20.04.1 and suddenly my laptop would freeze and lock up completely. It is not responsive to mouse and keyboard. I tried Alt+F2 to restart GNOME Shell.

The background video playing on the browser (YouTube) also stops, so I pressed Ctrl+Alt+Del. My SSH connection was also not working at that time.

Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

The CD tray of my Desktop PC opens and closes by itself occasionally. Sometimes it moves back at halfway. How can I fix this problem?

From its movement I believe it is due to some software problem.

It works really well when I insert CD. Can I turn it off without any problem by using any method? Can DISKS app help with this problem?

I have my PC connected to my TV through HDMI, I can only play sounds through the TV or the PC. Is there a way to make some windows play through the TV and the rest through the PC? So if I play a movie on the TV I can still use my PC at the same time without the movie sounding on the headphones. Do i need to meet certain hardware specifications?

Display resolution and Wifi gone after kernel upgrade

Some months ago I installed AMD ROCm on my Ubuntu (the PC has a Radeon GPU). As ROCm back then didn't support kernel 5.8 I removed kernel 5.8 and install kernel 5.4. It was silly to remove 5.8, but I didn't know better. Anyhow, with kernel 5.4 all was good.

Today, the latest version of ROCm supports kernel 5.8 (at least that's what they claim) and I'd like to switch back to the default kernel of  ...

Is there a clipboard (copy and paste) manager with stack or ring hotkey functionality?

I'm looking for a clipboard manager (of which I know there are many like ClipIt, CopyQ, etc) but I'm looking for something specific: I want to be able to copy multiple items separately (which will put them all into the clipboard manager's history) and then paste them all somewhere without having to use the mouse to go to the manager menu to select them to paste. This causes my entire system to slow to a crawl until I can shut it down. I'm just curious if anyone else has this issue? I've tried re installing with no luck.

Slow KVM after moving from 20.04 to 21.04

I use a lot of KVM through virt-manager.

On 20.04 it worked ok, but on 21.04 the VMs are kinda slow, specially the UI.

Is there some known problem around this?

UPDATE:

I moved back to 20.04 which is much much faster. I don't know what's wrong but something is very wrong with 21.04. Unfortunately I needed 21.04 to use HDMI because 20.04 has a terrible bug on my xps

I'm trying to understand how netplan is working exactly and I get stuck at the following technical design concept:

From netplan introduction:

During early boot, the netplan “network renderer” runs which reads /{lib,etc,run}/netplan/*.yaml and writes configuration to /run to hand off control of devices to the specified networking daemon.

This is because of the netplan key goal:

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
