How to install Ubuntu 21.10 to a mapper device (to dual boot LUKS)
cn flag
Dan

I tried to use this very old post as a model to install directly to the LUKS mapper instead of to an LVM set on top of the mapper, but the Ubuntu 21.10 installer explicitly forbids installing to a mapper.

The basic TLDR of the old post was:

  1. Boot in try it mode
  2. Manually create the LUKS partition
  3. Do a luksOpen on the partition
  4. Point the installer at the "opened" partition
  5. Post install click "continu ...

How can I install Python 3.8 on Ubuntu 16.04? (ppa:deadsnakes doesn't support Ubuntu 16.04 anymore)
co flag

I used to use the following gist to install Python 3.8 on Ubuntu 16.04:

# install PPA
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:deadsnakes/ppa

# update and install
sudo apt update
sudo apt install python3.8 python3.8-dev python3.8-venv

However, ppa:deadsnakes doesn't support Ubuntu 16.04 anymore, and the above script doesn't work:

 > [6/6] RUN apt install -y python3.8:

Trackpoint not working at all on Lenovo t570 with Ubuntu 20.04
ca flag

I have just acquired a clean Lenovo T570, and the first thing I always do is install Ubuntu.

The Trackpad is working fine in Ubuntu, but the Trackpoint (the red nubby joystick mouse between the G, H, and B keys) does not seem to be recognized at all, and the three associated buttons do not seem to do anything. I dislike the touchpad, strongly in favor of the TrackPoint, so this is an issue for me ...

How to enable hibernation for ALL power actions (button, idle, lid-close) on 21.10?
cn flag
Dan

I'm installing Ubuntu 21.10 along side Windows 10 on an HP Probook G10 which is not supported. Since suspend isn't supported, and crashes when attempted, I went ahead and manually enabled hibernation which seems to work fine. Now I'm trying to move all power actions from the default of suspend to the only working option of hibernation. I tried some old methods, but they don't seem to work anymore with ...

What should I do?

Ok, I'm not expert on Ubuntu whatsoever but I really need some help. I was trying to install x11vnc to screen share my laptop through the terminal. While I was doing it, x11vnc asked to add password and so I did. Then I needed to open another terminal and it started with "I have no name!"@laptop, so I thought a restart should help.

I restarted the laptop and only one line of code a ...

Install ubuntu on an external drive without affecting windows bootloader - not working
vn flag

I wanted to install Ubuntu 20.04 into an external drive without affecting the Windows Bootloader. That means on a normal boot, Windows should load. But if I entered the BIOS boot menu, I can switch it to the external drive, so that Ubuntu will load.

What I have done earlier is to "Try ubuntu", opened Terminal, ran ubiquity --no-bootloader, and installed ubuntu to my second drive (sdb, mount point: /). ...

Join More Than Two Displays
cn flag

With more than two screens, Join Displays is the only mode available.

source

Is there any way around this? I want to "Join Displays" on every screen, but I have more than two. Ubuntu will only "Join" one, and then "Mirror[s]" the others.

The Windows equivalent would be changing "Extend desktop to this display" instead of "Duplicate."

I am a newer Ubuntu 20.04 user. I accidentally deleted Network Manager. I reinstalled it realizing what I had done and everything is back to normal, except I cannot save a vpn in the settings to connect to my Nord VPN. The VPN setting in the drop down menu no longer exists. When I go into the actual settings and manually add the VPN it wont finalize and save the VPN for use, it just disappears...

Determining why settings says "Unknown Display" in 21.10

I have recently built a system with a Intel CPU with embedded graphics. I have installed Ubuntu 21.10 and it says "Unknown Display" in the settings and I cannot change the display resolution from 1024x768 even though the monitor supports much higher resolution.

I ran across a discussion about using inxi -G and saw that it said driver "N/A" so I thought I needed the latest Intel drivers. Here wa ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
