Dummy Output - Pulseaudio card profiles not loaded - Help!
br flag

My sound system is replaced by a 'Dummy output'. The issue comes and goes, I really don't know how to address it. The problem persists even after reinstalling ubuntu and running a live image.

I've tried reloading Pulseaudio and Alsa, reinstalling packets, editing the alsa-base.conf, adding my user to the audio group. No help.

Why mdadm RAID does **NOT** boost reading performance?
br flag

I add 2 NVMe SSDs(Samsung 980 Pro) into my PC as tablespace of postgresql, while the OS boots from another SATA SSD(Samsung 860 EVO) as before.

These 2 nvme m.2 SSDs have a basic performace about reading 6GB/s and writing 600MB/s, that I got in Gnome-Disks.

I made a soft RAID from these two nvme by means of mdadm, and then tested again.

The writing rate reaches 1.3GB/s as expected, but the reading rate ...

Login Loop on Ubuntu Studio 20.04 LTS, multiple computers, tty3 doesn't work
nl flag

I have control of two Ubuntu Studio 20.04 LTS computers, one at home and one at my church. Both have become stuck in a pernicious login loop. I've searched for instructions but all say to break out by logging in to tty1 or tty3. That doesn't work, it just starts yet another login loop for the tty terminal. Recovery mode does the same thing. Apparently this started after a recent software update, because ...

Desktop Widget Creation
pt flag

am trying to write an application (gnome extension) that will function as a desktop widget (think Android Widget), always showing only on the desktop (not a typical application instance, no minimize, no maximize, no close, etc.) for Ubuntu 20.04. An example of something that behaves how I would like to write my app is conky, writing over the desktop and staying on behind other windows. I looked through  ...

Create a shared folder for KVM Windows guest on Ubuntu server 20.04 or properly set up NAT connection
kn flag

Hi I am posting this because all of the guides I can find involve a GUI. I am using Ubuntu server and controlling it with cockpit. I installed the following packages to get virtual machines working: qemu qemu-kvm libvirt-daemon libvirt-clients bridge-utils virt-manager. I can use my Windows 10 Pro guest from the web interface, but I need it to save my DVR recordings to /Data/Tank/Plex/Playon. If I go se ...

Why does Ubuntu use ext4 by default?
cn flag

Note: I'm not asking how to use a different filesystem. I'm asking for the reasoning behind the choice of ext4.

Ubuntu (21.10) uses ext4 by default. But, there are a great many other filesystems that have great features. ZFS, for example, can stripe disks (see RAID-Z). There are other good ones, for example XFS has great performance for a very large number of files.

So, what is the rationale for pic ...

My laptop Asus Zenbook UX410U with Ubuntu 18.04, kernel 5.4.0-91-generic has been suffering random crashes, some of them even happening during booting. Second monitor suddenly upside down and shows bios logo and the cursor is X
us flag

I have just booted my computer up, and one of my monitors is suddenly upside down and only shows my bios logo. I can move my mouse to it, but it appears as an X. Also, for some reason after entering my password, my bios logo also flashes onto the screen before loading to the desktop.

I did look in nvidia-settings, and found that somehow the display had been set to 'invert', so I changed that.

Ubuntu Server 21.10 on Raspberry Pi 4 - text displays off to the left on

I just installed Ubuntu Server 21.10 on my Raspberry Pi 4. Problem is I can't read everything that's displayed because the first 6 or 7 characters are off to the left off the screen (not viewable).

How do I adjust or resize my view? I'm pretty new to Linux and I'm trying but not seeing everything makes this waaay harder. And I've plugged the Raspberry Pi into 2 different tv's. Both 50" via hdmi.  ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
