Frequent System Hangs Requiring Hard Reboot
us flag
j2b

I am a novice, relatively new to Ubuntu. In the past few days I have had numerous hangs using Ubuntu 20.04 LTS on a new ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Hero motherboard with AMD Ryzen 9 3950X CPU that ran for several months prior with no issues. The OS is on an M.2 SSD. Other than Updates from Software Updater, I have not done software installs, and the hangs do not seem to have circumstances in common. The sy ...

Ubuntu gets stuck in a login loop unless a different user logs in
in flag

I'm trying not to make a duplicate of a previous question, but I do have the same problem. I'm using gdm3 and have purged, and reinstalled multiple times. A different user 'test' and sudo startx work. So it seems to be a config issue, but I'm unsure. I've exhausted everything save reinstalling Ubuntu.

After following this question, I am stumped as to what to do because I'm not seeing the same files. I ...

how to restore formatting to libreoffice writer comments
ru flag

In the attached image you can see that the lines connecting the comments to the edited text have become white on white. Also the commenters were all color coded before, but now all white on back background.

I probably caused this change by trying to make the background for the Styles column the same as the paper instead of charcoal gray. Why on earth would it be designed that way? I can fix the S ...

Network Manager settings not sticking after reboot
tm flag

I'm attempting to automatically establish a VPN connection after reboot. I created the profile via the network manager GUI and everything works well. I can use nm-connection-editor to edit the ethernet (and wifi) config to check the "Automatically connect to VPN." If I restart either interface (wlan0 or eth0), the VPN connection will be established.

When I reboot, however, the VPN connection is  ...

Once I get this message there isn't really much I can do, I can't type anything in or exit it, the only way is to shut down the VM, but than I end up in this infinite loop. Does anyone have any ideas wha ...

Configuring VLAN QoS Mapping through netplan
io flag

I am trying to setup a VLAN via netplan with a specific QoS mapping so that I can prioritize traffic through that (virtual) interface. However, I cannot seem to find any way to do that given the available options within netplan, which appears to lack several of the features ip/iproute does.

For instance, I configure a VLAN for an Ubuntu 20.04 LTS device like so using ip-link:

sudo ip link add link enp87 ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
