Ubuntu 18.04 does not switch between users after upgrade

I have upgraded Ubuntu 16.04 to Ubuntu 18.04. I do not intend to make a further upgrade to Ubuntu 20.xx for the moment. All looks to have gone well except the switching of users from within the desktop environment. My desktop environment was and is Unity.

There are two users in this computer. The expected behaviour is that within the desktop environment I can switch to any other profile without  ...

Monitor cutting out from time to time
in flag

I've been using Ubuntu as my main OS for a while now, but there's one thing that really bothers me.

I'm using Ubuntu 21.04 with Wayland with fractional scaling. My main monitor, a Samsung U28D590D (via DisplayPort), frequently loses its signal for a few seconds and then reconnects again. The frequency of this happening seems random. Sometimes it doesn't happen for hours, other times it just cuts  ...

How do I change which application is controlled by the audio controll keys?
in flag

I'm sorry if this is an obvious question. When I have a video open in my browser and an mp3 file playing in VLC, how do I change which application is controlled by the play/pause and forward/backward keys?

Intuitively I would expect the last application to be used to be controlled by these keys, but that doesn't seem to be the case. For me, the browser video is tied to the shortcuts, even if I've ...

Can't use microphone from headphones on Ubuntu 20.04

I have a Logitech PRO headset with a microphone. But when I connect it with a single 3.5mm jack is only uses the headphones but does not recognize the microphone. I know that there are those adapters for that but for some reason I did not receive one.

I wouldn't be asking this question if I didn't try it the same way with a single 3.5mm jack on a Windows machine and it worked perfectly. It recogn ...

In my role as a tutor I often have to set up test Ubuntu installations to help students that use Ubuntu - I myself use Windows (sorry!).

For convenience I always install xrdp, and I found out by Googling and lots of experiment that I need to also install xorgxrdp. Then I can RDP to the test installations from my Windows workstation and this all works very well.

Stuck on mounting ext4 but luks is unlocked on usb drive
ru flag

I have a drive that I cannot access anymore. I have it on LUKS and at first it worked properly, but now it's just stuck on mounting the EXT4 part of the drive.

I tried using gparted and mkusb but both just hangs and gets stuck too.

Unmounting does not work too, it just hangs until I manually unplug the drive.

This is what I currently see on Disks.

Can I change the Linux distribution without formatting or losing my data?
in flag

Let's say I want to change of distribution. I'm in Ubuntu 20.04 and I want to change to a ZorinOS just for the sake of the new look and feel, they are both Ubuntu-based so I'm guessing a migration would be easily so I wouldn't lose every file, right? I assuming that my GNOME extensions will be unused and other thing related to Desktop but the rest should be fine ?

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
