GDM3 not starting, where are the log files?
in flag

I am trying to build my custom distro based on impish x86_64 using debootstrap. I am not using any display drivers, only the generic ones included in linux-image-generic. I use systemd-boot as a bootloader, and I have installed gnome-session, xorg and gdm3 using apt. When I try to boot the image, everything seems to load, but when GDM3 launches, the screen goes black only with a white underscore cursor  ...

I'm at a loss with the following setup:

My Ubuntu server runs a native QEMU/KVM based Windows 10 (no Virtualbox or alike!). Two folders of the server are shared with the Windows guest. Everything is fine but one single file that doesn't show up in the Windows guest. Moving or copying this file into another (shared) folder followed by a restart of the guest doesn't help. The file's attributes are ide ...

How to prevent rdiff-backup from deleting files?
cn flag

I am using rdiff-backup to back up my data (on Ubuntu 20.04), which works quite smoothly - and I appreciate the incremental backup, keeping the data easily accessible.

However, since my internal hard drive is quite small, I would sometimes like to remove things after I have backed them up to the external backup drive. But that makes rdiff-backup remove it from the backup drive next time it is syn ...

Slow Chrome rendering on Ubuntu 21.10 with Gnome

After upgrading to Ubuntu 21.10 from 21.04, Chrome has slowed down significantly when rendering. This is especially present on Slack, but it shows up in many other sites, too.

I'm running Gnome 40.4.0 on X11, with Chrome 95.0.4638.54 (all 64-bit). Wayland interferes with Zoom screensharing, so I've had to go back to X.org, but the issue was not solved by going to Wayland.

I've connected my Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 to my laptop and it used to work perfectly but after one boot it just stopped working. Change username on Ubuntu(usermod: user * is currently used by process *)
cn flag

I'm trying to change my username on Ubuntu WSL using this command:

sudo usermod -l NEWUSERNAME OLDUSERNAME

But I get a message:

usermod: user OLDUSERNAME is currently used by process 90

Running process(PID=90 in this case) is bash process so when I try to kill it whole WSL turns off.

Is there a way I can safely change username using usermod or some other command?

Recover Grub dual boot UEFI Windows 8 + CSM installed Lubuntu 20.04

I have an old Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5105. It has the original Windows 8. I have just installed dual booting Lubuntu on it, selecting "Something Else" during installation. The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
