What happens to GRUB when you install the same version of Ubuntu twice?
cn flag

I installed Ubuntu as dual boot with Windows, thought there was a problem (actually there wasn't) and proceeded to delete the volumes from disk manager without making any changes to the boot loaders. Then I installed Ubuntu again following the same procedure(manual partition, left boot loader device as default).

It works fine now but there's only one entry in the grub menu. When I run sudo efibootmgr ...

What's the point of a .desktop file with NoDisplay=true
ng flag

From what I read browsing askubuntu, a .desktop file in /usr/share/applications/ is useful for creating a shortcut to opening an application. However, there are many more .desktop files in this folder than there are applications in my Show Applications menu. It seems like the other .desktop files have the line NoDisplay=true. For example, I have the file python3.8.desktop that has this line. So what's the ...

Dash to Panel not showing running indicator for Nautilus
tr flag

I use the extension Dash to Panel to combine the top bar and the dock, because I have a small 768p screen and both things takes a lot of space.

Since I upgraded to 21.10 the bottom bar doesn't show the running indicator for this particular app (Nautilus), even when I click on the icon when already there's an open session it opens a new one, so it doesn't even seem to recognize that the app is run ...

How do I check if command failed... with a pipe?
cn flag

So I have a script like this:

somecommad | grep --invert-match something

I'd like to be able to conditionally run a different command if somecommand fails. Here's what I tried:

somecommand | grep --invert-match something || {
    echo 'Oops'
}

But that didn't work (the grep wasn't executed). What is the proper way to do this?

How to hibernate after some time or when battery is discharged
tr flag

I use Ubuntu 21.04. sudo systemctl hibernate works fine to hibernate. But suspend doesn't (see: Some buttons don't work after suspend andresume)

How can I automate hibernation when using battery for these rules:

  • 45 minutes inactive
  • less than 10% battery left

Is it possible also to prevent sleep when I close the lid? I set logout and blank, but still get sleep

Options for remote desktop with single session and hide local screen in 2021?

I have an Ubuntu 20.04 desktop at work which I need to remote into. I'm able to with xrdp, but there's a problem:

Every time I remote in it creates a new session, and when I sign in locally that session dies. I want to be able to use the same session every time, like remoting into Windows does.

Now, you might be thinking, oh, why don't you use VNC then?

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
