Keyboard mapping overrides
pk flag

I just upgraded to 21.10, and since firefox wouldn't no longer find a display and start on X, I'm moving to Wayland (and happy about it).

However, I'm having problems on doing keyboard mapping override. I'd like to customize a bit my Engilsh Dvorak keyboard layout. I'm successfully using following config on Fedora, but unable to get it loading or working on Ubuntu.

How do I give one user read/write access to everything another user has access to?

I have a situation where I have to work as user alice, and I need to be able to read, write, and edit directories and files created by bob. I know that I could take a specific directory created by bob, and give alice permission to access it with chown or chmod. But sometimes bob will be creating new files and directories himself, and I want to be able to access those as alice easily, without having t ...

I am using a Digital Ocean virtual machine with Ubuntu Server 21.04.

Upgrade to 21.10 brings 15-20° CPU temp increase
us flag

Last Saturday night, I upgraded from Ubuntu 20.04 to 21.10. In reviewing my logs, I've noticed that immediately upon my upgrade, and lasting since, my PC's CPU temp baseline has jumped 15-20°. See charts from Friday, Saturday, and Sunday below, for comparison. I'd love to know if anyone has any thoughts on what might be going on.

Dash black after unlocking in 21.10

After upgrading to 21.10, I find that when I unlock the screen after it has been dormant for a while, the dash is black. The only way I've found to get it back is to log out and back in again.

I didn't have this issue in 21.04, so how do I go about troubleshooting it?

So I'm looking for a way to use the perf monitoring tool but I'm on a non-standard configuration. Currently I'm using an OEM 5.13 kernel from Ubuntu on Fossa 20.04.3.

Normally one would install linux-tools-common & linux-tools-generic with a probable inclusion of the linux-hwe-[kernel version]-tools-common package. Unfortunately all I see are packages for kernels 5.4, 5.8, and 5.11.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
