Explanation of errors found by fsck on ext4 filesystem
sz flag

I restarted my system from the terminal using shutdown -r now (instead of the usual option in the menu), and then I ran fsck on the filesystem and got errors like:

Free blocks count wrong ...
Free inodes count wrong ...
Clearing orphaned inode ...

And it fixed them.

Were any of these errors serious? Should I be worried there might be lingering corruption in my filesystem?

Thanks!

I have a laptop with win10 preinstalled. So I have a digital key license.

I have converted my laptop to a dual-boot system with ubuntu 21.04. I want to completely remove windows but install win 10 in a virtualbox. I don't know if my win10 license would be recognised/valid inside a vitualbox installation.

Something keeps asking my laptop to shut down
fr flag

I use Ubuntu 20.04 with i3wm. My laptop keeps shutting down randomly. To check if it was a problem with i3 or some program I was starting with i3, I switched to the default gnome environment. But there too, I kept randomly receiving the dialogue box which asks me to confirm if I want to shut down.

How do I troubleshoot this?

Windows 11, Ubuntu and Bitlocker
sa flag

I want to clean-install Win11 over Ubuntu 20.04. I originally installed Ubuntu over Win10 back in the day.

My problem: The Win11 installer tells me there is no partition in any of my drives that I could install Win11 to.

I have 2 hard disks (1 TB and 128 GB). Ubuntu is installed on the 1TB one and most of the 128 GB disk is encrypted by Bitlocker (from previously using Win10). I don't recall the  ...

How to use GNU GRUB 2.04 to boot UBUNTU
ph flag

I clean installed Ubuntu 20.04.2.0 LTS-Desktop-AMD64 from a DVD written with an ISO image file.

The installation went through its steps, including erasing all partitions and formatting the 1 TB Solid-State drive (SSD) as a single partition.

I then removed the DVD from its drive and rebooted the box. Rather than booting Ubuntu, a single line error message splashed for a fraction of a second (couldn't ...

I've just installed a new ubuntu server. It is a virtual machine hosted on Hyper-V. I'm trying to change the root password using the following commands:

and then entering the new password.

Everything look fine until I reboot the server. Then only the old password works.

Could you please advise how to resolve this?

Thank you

Second Monitor not recognized - Trouble with NVIDIA Drivers (RTX 2060)

I've recently installed Ubuntu 21.10 (Impish Indri) on my MSI GL75 Leopard. I have an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 and installed the nvidia-drivers-470. Before installing the proprietary drivers, my second screen was recognized, but now it is not. I've tried a few solutions but so far nothing worked. I am using an HDMI cable for the second monitor.

I recently installed Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS into an SSD (it previously had Kali, but I guess that doesn't matter), with the kernel 5.11.0-37-generic.

I have a problem: the computer doesn't turn off, it stays in the black, Ubuntu, shutting down screen, where it says:

... systemd[1]: Finished Power-Off.
... systemd[1]: Reached target Power-Off.

I have an external USB 3.0 disk which I mount as:

sudo mount -t ntfs -o rw,auto,user,umask=003,o+r,gid=science /dev/sda1 /media/external

There are 2 problems, which I am not sure how to solve:

1: When I do touch test, the file is by default executable.

2: The file is owned by root rather than the user.

What I am trying to do is achieve a setting where the user and groups have unfettered access to  ...

Accidentally ran fsck against mounted esp partition

I accidentally ran fsck against my esp(EFI boot) partition while it was mounted. Fsck reported that the filesystem's boot sector backup differed from it's current state at offset 65. This means that the dirty bit was set in the current state but not in the backup so I chose no action. Next it informed me that the dirty bit was set so I chose to remove it, no other errors were reported so I wrote the cha ...

How to remove Snap completely without losing Firefox?

I am wondering whether or not there is a way to completely remove Snap from Ubuntu 21.10 (Impish Indri) without losing the ability to install Ubuntu's default browser Firefox.

When I just recently updated to the newest Ubuntu release I realized that the installer programmatically reinstalled Snap, although I had manually removed it before. Additionally the installer removed Firefox, which was inst ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
