Seeking an "operator present" indication for a remote system accessed over ssh

An elderly relative uses a Ubuntu 18.04 + LXDE desktop, mostly just for internet browsing and to play a few word games. They rarely shut the PC down...last time I checked, it had been turned on for over 15 days.

I administer the system remotely over ssh.

For the occasional time that I need to reboot the system, I'd like some means to determine if my relative is actively using it so that I don't dis ...

i have encountered this issue for the second time now. I have this problem when i have a Windows / Ubuntu dual boot system.

When i enter Ubuntu, there are 2 options to turn off the PC. One is power off, which always works and the other one is suspend. When you do suspend and you haven't entered your password yet, on user screen, very rarely, you will boot up your PC with a black screen. Once you  ...

Why can't I change php.ini?
cn flag

I hosted a WordPress website on Ubuntu 20.04 via LAMP. Now when I try to install a theme, "The uploaded file exceeds the upload_max_filesize directive in php.ini." this error occurs. I can't save by changing upload_max_filesize in /etc/php/7.4/cli/php.ini.

As you can see in the image below, it says Read Only next to the name of the php.ini file.

Now how can I edit this file?

Canon printer extremely slow
in flag

I have a Canon Pixma MG6450 connected through the wireless network to my Ubuntu 21.04 system. The driver was downloaded from Canon's website. It uses a bash script to install itself.

Printing is very slow, at about 1 page per hour. The same document can be printed from my Windows PC in less than a minute. This delay seems independent of software: it's very slow whether I'm printing a PDF using ev ...

RTL8821CE driver stopped working on Ubuntu 20.04.3
ph flag

I've had to install the driver per https://github.com/tomaspinho/rtl8821ce a couple times on an ASUS laptop and each time it works for a while before breadking. I have looked at dozens of "solutions" although none have really resolved the problem permanently (ie, I have to uninstall/reinstall the driver after a while). Now, however, I can not get my Wifi to run at all without a USB dongle.

Slow boot after cloning my Ubuntu partition from HDD to SSD without swap
aw flag

So I had Ubuntu installed on my HDD along with a swap partition. I cloned only my Ubuntu partition (without swap) from HDD to a new SSD via live Gparted, installed grub on the new disk and (physically) removed the old drive from the system. The cloned installation is noticeably snappier than the one on HDD but it boots quite slow. With a bit of research I got to know that there might be a resume file wh ...

How to recover OVA files using photorec?
aw flag

So I want to recover an OVA file and testdisk couldn't help with that and I know that it will work with photorec but I don't see the OVA extension in file options.

I tried This but they don't give enough explanations for that (sorry if that seems dumb)

Can someone tell me how to recover those step by step?

Thanks in advance.

Every time I boot up my desktop, (Ubuntu Mate 20.04) regardless of the system I have it in, I get a message that says "System Program Problem Detected" ok cool, what problem? unlike other Ubuntu warnings I have seen in the past, this message box doesn't have an option for further details. what does the power management applet do on a desktop?
au flag
j0h

ok, I understand what the power management daemon does on a laptop, conserving battery power by scaling down the cpu, and dimming the screen. On a desktop however, is the power management daemon necessary? (as in, is there anything else I am not thinking of, before I turn this off?)

Wifi icon disappear, no internet iwlwifi errors

The Problem

The wifi icon suddenly disappears, leaving me with no internet access. This has happened about 3 times in the last week, and doesn't seem to be triggered by anything I do. Last one (the one I'm copying the dmesg results) was caused while I was working on emacs (had a couple inactive tabs opened in firefox).

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
