backup strategy for libreoffice files in ~/.config/libreoffice/4/user/backup directory
tr flag

In backing up my home directory, I find I have just shy of 30,000 files of the form

filename.odb_counter.odb

my guess is these are the files used to recover corrupted files when they occur. I don't know if they are action-by-action backups or session-by-session backups.

Many of the files are 0 bytes. Most of the files run from .8M to 1M.

What is the downside to excluding these files from the backup, or de ...

How to merge many files together?
za flag

I have around 58,000 txt files that have the prefix ppdb- in a directory. I want to merge all of them into one file.
Wgen I try to merge them using cat ppdb-* >> out.txt it gives me an error saying "-bash: /usr/bin/cat: Argument list too long".
Is there a way to merge all the files together efficiently?

Whenever I try to paste now (yes, in insert mode) it first overwrites lines, then pastes part of the selection and sometimes it drops into spell check.

Nothing changed beyond unattended-upgrades doing it's thing.

VLC takes long time to start DVDs

I use VLC to watch DVD's. Some DVD's start immediately, and some take as long as 5 minutes before the DVD menu shows up on the screen (the orange loading bar at the bottom just "bounces" back and forth the whole time).

It is not "random". The same DVD's consistently start quickly, and the same DVD's consistently take a really long time. Also, nothing is wrong with the DVD's. If I put them in my p ...

Headphones "unplugged" even when plugged in

When I plug my headphones in (to either the headphones or "line out" ports), no sound comes out and pavucontrol lists "Headphones (unplugged)". Selecting that output does not actually result in sound. Sound works via the speakers or via a USB headset.

I have tested each set of headphones I'm using on other devices, and I have also gotten headphones to work after rebooting into a Pop!OS install medium. ...

Lubuntu 20.04 LTS: is http apt transport safe nowadays?
in flag

Why Ubuntu accesses repositories via http, not https? Is it safe? Infested Wi-Fi router can easily replace an original .deb with a malware unless those .debs are encrypted and/or signed. Modern devices are powerful enough to perform DPI and provide fake .deb files/packets „on the fly“. Should I choose one of the few https mirrors in „Software Sources“?

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
