How to enable the sound on my HP470G8 laptop with Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS running with WSL2 on windows 10 pro?
in flag

I have recently installed Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS on my laptop HP470G8 within WSL2 on my Windows 10 pro. (NOTE: Is not dual boot). For that purpose, I downloaded Ubuntu 20.04 LTS from the Microsoft Store app after I set up WSL2 (Windows Subsystem for Linux). I suppose this version of Ubuntu is actually a server type (not desktop) because I found a sentence that best describes that difference on the internet. ...

Change working directory when using "Open with custom command" option
in flag

I was trying to open .exe files in Lubuntu 18.04 32-bit edition and wine 3.0.1 just by double-clicking on the file. I used the "Open with custom command" open with option and issued wine %f but it doesn't work fine with applications which requires its files to be in the same directory, as the command is emulated in another terminal with home as working directory.
I tried to use cd "$(dirname %f)" && ...

Complete change of hardware

Will my current Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS work on a completely new system (new hardware) if i simply plug in my old HDD into the new system?

As far as I know, the drivers are in the kernel which is what makes the OS most stable and hence there is no need for installation of drivers. The OS usually works fine on any system/hardware that is around a year old.

XPS 9510 with OLED screen no brightness control with Ubuntu 21.04
cn flag

I just run Ubuntu 21.04 in live mode to test before a full installation on an XPS 15 9510 with the OLED screen, but I cannot control the screen brightness, I know there is an issue with OLED screens from many years ago, nonetheless I thought at this point it was already solved. Dell provides a temporary workaround via the terminal, but it is not very practical:

A mechanical way of finding out any action's impact on config files
mm flag

Is there a mechanical way to find out the impact of any action on the config files?

The action can be anything: installing a package, adding a user, turning on a service, or updating an SSH key.

For example:

  • Adding a user may modify /etc/passwd, /etc/group, and /etc/shadow.

  • ssh-copy-id may modify the authorized_keys file of the user on the server.

A particular microSD adapter failing to be recognized

So I have a 4GB SD card with a disk image written on it and I have two microSD adapters: one is native to the card, the other is an old one.

Inserting the card with the older adapter yields no problems and the card is recognized as expected:

It is the native adapter, however, that won't work:

Hi, So I noticed I was having an issue with my 2FA codes, after debugging I realised that my system clock wasn't working properly. After further digging, I realised that the "systemd-timesyncd" system was dead due to a "missing dependency".

I ran a couple of apt updates and upgrades, cleans, purges and nothing seemed to be coming up. Running "systemctl status "syste ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
