Installing PCIe SATA card conflicts with onboard NIC
ug flag

I recently installed a fresh 21.04 server onto new hardware. Everything worked great. Today, I tried to add an ASM1166 based PCIe SATA controller. When I boot with the card in, it causes issues with my onboard NIC (RTL8125). The issue appears to happen during the boot process as the NIC lights turn on and flash when the computer starts, then suddenly go out halfway through startup. If I shutdown, remove ...

Is there a renaming tool (for Ubuntu 18.04 Mate) which is able to work on folder names as well?
in flag

I am rather new to Linux, I am using Ubuntu 18.04 Mate. When I need to do more complex file renaming tasks I prefer to use KRename (the GUI version that got installed with apt-get). But often I'd also like to rename folders' names (this question is NOT about batch renaming of file names). It seems KRename (GUI) is not capable of doing that. So I wonder whether there's a tool to achieve that (as a be ...

limit data usage of discord
us flag

As far as my research took me, there is no way to set discord to manually reduce video quality. It can reduce it, but only if your bandwidth is poor. If your bandwidth is good, but the data plan is small, you get in trouble fast :P

So, the questions:

  1. I'm I wrong? Can I limit the resolution of incoming videos to save bandwidth, regardless of what the user is sending?

My daily backup crashed, how can I rerun cron daily?
in flag

My daily backup crashed because a "bad" file of 30 MB existed which caused me to exceed by 25 MB daily backup limit:

-rw-rw-r-- rick/rick 29018177 2021-08-09 23:07 .config/mserve/ipc.pickle

I've removed the file but how can I call tell cron to run /etc/cron.daily jobs again?

How do I Effectively Implement Encryption?
ng flag

It sounds like an odd question but, I've always worried about encrypting something and then losing the keys to get it back. I use MFA, good password policies, etc. I run regular [local] backups. I feel like the only thing I'm not doing is encrypting my data. (This is the main reason I don't do a lot of remote backups; I want my data to be encrypted before sending it off-site.) The only reason I've n ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
