Icons are stretched after upgrade to 20.04
cn flag

I upgraded to 20.04 earlier. One problem I couldn't find information about is that when large icons are used (Application and search), the icons are stretched - they appear too tall and overlap with other controls:

I looked for relevant configuration and couldn't find it, and tried other icon themes which all did the same.

How can I fix this?

Installing packages and configuring post Ubuntu install
sa flag

I want to install some packages and configure Ubuntu after Ubuntu is installed on my laptop.

I have found that we can use .sh files to create such things. But I think it is not very robust. For example, if something happens during installation and I ran the .sh file again, it will start things from the beginning. Also if I want to append multiple lines to the ~/.bashrc file, it is not very conveni ...

Question on accessing salvaged Ubuntu boot drive
ca flag

Not a power user, so this may be a very stupid question. My ever-trusty decade-plus old (probably closer to 15 than 10) Ubuntu desktop died. Used it for web browsing and email only. Dead-dead so I assume either a MOBO or a PSU failure. Frankly not worth fixing. For a temp fix I found a windows 10 mini that I purchased last year as a backup to my Windows laptop (wanted it as we went to remote desktops w ...

Global Hotkeys with Wine and Winamp

I have for the longest time been using gMusicBrowser which honestly is brilliant. But I'll always have a sweet sweet soft spot for WinAmp. So if I could get the hotkeys working I would be able to use it again on Linux.

I am able to get the correct pid with xdotool:

xdotool search --limit 1 --all --pid $( pgrep winamp ) --name winamp

However it now seems that the keys are not being passed t ...

i have installed nagios4 from ubuntu repository packages in a kvm guest running ubuntu server 20.04. i am able to invoke sendmail manually and can send emails. However nagios isn't sending any emails. /var/log/mail.log only contains entries for my manual invocations. /var/log/nagios4/nagios.log contains numerous entries suggesting nagios is trying to send email:

strace, netstat or tcpdump to identify unknown network activity and program
cn flag

I've been trying to uncover the origin of some network calls, specifically to ip addresss associated with bc.googleusercontent.com

I'm a bit curious why this network activity only happens when using Firefox and from what I've read googleusercontent.com is reported as both a service for individuals outside the google ecosphere for private businesses, etc., as well as being used by google itself.

force installer to require a human

I'm trying to customize the installer but the documentation doesn't seem to discuss how it all starts up with all the possible options (or I don't see it so pointers to that would be helpful too).

Normally, when you start booting the "live cd" to do an install, the initial screen shows a "keyboard = human" with a timeout. What I'm looking for is to force that to always be true and to remove that  ...

I'm using Ubuntu 20.04, the command arecord -l up to a certain time was working fine and I could see all the audio devices.

Than, probable due to some my installation/compilation, arecord -l is not returning any devices.

How can I make it working again? Is it a possible to do a kind of restore in order to make it working?

I'm available to provide any information useful to understand the issue.

Does Ubuntu correctly detect my iGPU?
cn flag
Leo

According to Intel, my CPU has "Intel UHD Graphics 750". I have no further GPU.

It made me a bit concerned that Ubuntu seems to output something rather generic (i.e. "RKL GT1") and not a word about "UHD Graphics 750":

leo@ubuntu:~$ glxinfo | grep "OpenGL renderer string"

OpenGL renderer string: Mesa Intel(R) Graphics (RKL GT1)

Is that to be expected?

LibreOffice-Calc 7.1.4.2: How to display input bar results in a cell, *or* what is fraction-to-decimal formula?
ir flag

I want to enter a fraction in one cell and display its decimal equivalent in another cell. If I format a cell for fraction input, and enter a fraction such as ⅜ in that cell, I see the decimal equivalent (0.375) in the Input bar. How can I show that decimal equivalent in a cell, or what is the formula for converting a fraction to decimal, and displaying the result in a cell?

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
