Refresh rate slows to 1 FPS/ unusable when I close the lid on my laptop Dell Precision 7530 and use external monitors after upgrade to Ubuntu 21.04
cn flag

After upgrade from Linux Ubuntu 20.10 to Ubuntu 21.04 on a Dell Precision 7530, with Nvidia drivers correctly installed and reporting correctly using recommended nvidia-driver-470. With a laptop lid open, and run glxgears from terminal, refresh rate is 60-62 FPS.

With laptop lid closed FPS drops immediately to 1 FPS and is unusable. How to resolve this issue?

When booting my laptop with Ubuntu 20.04 I get to the login screen, here I see my account as normal; after I click on my account it keeps submitting the unfilled password over and over again for several times resulting in the message: "sorry that didn't work please try again". After these 10 times submitting an empty password I can login without any problems and e ...

I want to transfer the SMS messages on my Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone to my PC with Ubuntu (20.04.2 LTS), in a form in which I can open and view the messages on my PC as I do on my smartphone.

Running Ubuntu 21.04. Easiest way to get Deja Dup to automatically create and save a backup job log file after every backup job?
in flag

I'm using the Deja Dup GUI. I'm mostly a Linux newbie beginner so if the answer involves lots of complicated command lines without context, I may not be able to follow (unless you make it fully step by step with no steps left out and with clear instructions).

I tried the DEBUG=1 option but could not determine if and where the log was saved.

If the best answer is "use xyz backup app instead" that's fine ...

I am actually on Kubuntu right now but I had the same problem on manjaro GNOME as well a few weeks ago.

Under some circumstances, like panning the camera in blender in a bigger scene, dragging some sliders in blender or closing Zoom windows, my desktop kinda freezes and jitters when I move my mouse as if the last couple of frames were replaying over and over again.

I can still hear music I had on or ...

Shotwell multiple libraries with multiple watch directories

I am trying to create and maintain multiple Shotwell libraries on the same machine (and same user account).

It is easy enough to lanch/create a new library with:

shotwell -d [new-library-directory]

(as per here)

However, it seems Shotwell just scans and watches the same folders for both libraries (i.e. if you change the library to scan/watch in Preferences - it changes it globally - i.e. for both  ...

I have been trying to limit the memory usage of firefox, by following this tutorial: https://dev.to/msugakov/taking-firefox-memory-usage-under-control-on-linux-4b02

In there, we limit the memory usage of Firefox by using systemd

systemd-run --unit=my-firefox --user --scope -p MemoryHigh=6G -p MemoryMax=7G -p MemorySwapMax=0 firefox

And then check memory usage by systemctl

IBus input not working in QT applications
us flag

I'm using Ubuntu 21.04. IBus Chinese (ibus-libzhuyin and ibus-libpinyin) works in all gnome applications but it doesn't work for any Qt applications like Anki.

I've tried adding this in ~/.xprofile (I read somewhere to do that):

export XMODIFIERS=@im=ibus
export GTK_IM_MODULE=ibus
export QT_IM_MODULE=ibus

But doing this seems to have no effect.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
