Python snap package: setup.py -> install_requires vs snap package yaml file -> pacakges
ke flag

Following this tutorial on how to make a snap package out of python code, it says one must have a setup.py. setup.py has a install_requires field which list all the package it requires.

Now the snap package yaml file asks for the exact same information under the packages attribute, even though it specifies it requires the setup.py file.

This does not seem very DRY, which makes me think there is somethin ...

I want to add static routes, I am aware I can do this with netplan but its creating a new network connection every time I try it. I have a wired connection and it creates another along side it in network manager and activates it which means the active connection is not the one the vpn is using and that means no internet access. You can see why its a problem.

Netplan - how to bring wifi interface up only?

On Focal ubuntu server, I just want the wifi interface to come up without trying to connect. I take my laptop to several coffee shops so it would not make sense to hard code the values here. Instead, I will use wpa_supplicant.

Right now the interface comes up but it tries to connect to the internet and timesout after 2 minutes. How can I make just the wifi interface come up without trying to conn ...

I am using Dolphin with KVantum. As it is, the folder icons vary, showing a representation of the contents. I want the icon to just be solid blue, like the Animation folder in the screenshot. I looked in the KVantum manager, didn't see anything.

How do I do this?

Ubuntu Focal freezes and does not resume after suspend (e.g. laptop close)
ph flag

When I close my laptop and re-open it (or it auto sleeps after inactivity), the machine will not resume correctly. The screen will show the sleep screen -- a brief description of the suspend activity -- and the fans will start blowing like a 747 taking off. The only recourse is to hard-boot (hold power button for 4 seconds).

This used to work OK with Bionic (which became unstable after too many  ...

Permanently disable point stick
tc flag

I have a faulty point stick on my old Dell latitude E6500 running Ubuntu 20.04. I have a temporary fix where I run xinput --disable *device id*, which works great but I have to run this every time I startup the computer.

I know I could use the Startup Applications to run the command every time the computer starts up but the issue with that is the device id always changes.

Lubuntu 18.04 VM - can't edit network connections after changing IP address
id flag

I cloned a Lubuntu 18.04 VM (running on ESXi). When I started the cloned copy I edited the network connections (using the menu in the lower right corner of the screen) and changed the IPV4 IP address so as not to clash with the original VM, then rebooted. Now I am unable to edit the network connections - nothing happens when I select "Edit Connection" from the networking menu in the lower right corner.  ...

Ubuntu 20.04 - Whirring Noise from XOrg

I am running Ubuntu 20.04 on my laptop on my SSD. Up until recent Ubuntu updates 1 week ago, the fans and harddrive, memory, CPU all had no issues and no noises at all.

In the last week, now it seems the CPU is whirring as a result of the XOrg process and this periodically starts and goes away as it spikes in CPU consumption.

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
