tr flag

I am trying to create keyboard shortcuts to open some apps, like Joplin (note taking app). They don't open the apps. I tested it with other apps, such as Firefox and cheese, and they work fine. I'm not completely sure, but so far it seems like it might be downloaded apps giving me this issue.

Avahi mDNS; Chromecast in multi subnet works... half

Ok, i'm busy for days now to get it to work. The goal is to have my Chromecast available on different subnets/vlans in my network. There where Avahi reflector comes in.

I set up an Avahi reflector using one of the many tutorials which can be found on the internet. So I have an Intel NUC running the thing, and have two VLANs configured on the NUC: Vlan (0) native vlan 192.168.3.0/24 and Vlan 4 192 ...

ubuntu 20.04, fail to lock after suspend
au flag
Tom

ubuntu 20.04 kernel 5.4.0-77-generic unity 7.5.0 desktop.

When I recover from suspend, it doens't show lock screen. Also, windows+L (I configured the shortcuts quite a bit, but whatever shortcut for locking the screen) doens't work any more.

Please don't ask why I use unity not gnome, or comment like gnome is better so use gnome. I need my desktop to be locked when I suspend it.

Terminal doesn't require sudo for things it should

I have a new Lenovo system with Ubuntu 20.04 pre-installed. So far, I have only created the administrator account. In setting up the machine, I've had to do a few operations with the Terminal. It does not require me to use sudo. It just accepts the bare command. I've never seen this happen in any previous distro, and it makes me nervous--am I operating as root without meaning to?

WSL ZSH Always Defaulting to Root

I've created a new user and set it with export DEFAULT_USER="<username>" in both my .zshrc and .bashrc files. I've run ubuntu2004.exe config --default-user <username> from the terminal. Nevertheless, every time I restart the terminal it runs as the root user. How do I get the terminal to start up using the correct (non-root) user?

How to redirect the output of 'cat' into a different folder?

I have a Python script, EulerianCycle.py, and an input file, euleriancycle.txt.

I am able to get the correct results by doing py EulerianCycle euleriancycle.txt > cat euleriancycleout.txt into the current folder (py is an alias for python3).

However, I have another folder in this current one called outputs, to which I want all my output files be directed.

HDMI overscanning

I'm using a pi4 with Ubuntu 21.04 and have it all hooked up to a TV via HDMI. The desktop is overscanned so much that icons are missing. I've tried changing the resolutions, but the same amount of overscanning persists. I also tried playing with the TV's zoom settings, which also failed to resolve the issue.

Workflow for managing bash rc's in cloud environments
br flag

I previously haven't edited bashrc on my cloud servers. The servers change too often the effort seems not worth it. I also don't want to upload my local bashrc to each cloud server because there is a lot of stuff in my local bashrc that only makes sense for my local machine. But I have certain aliases etc that I would like to have on all my cloud servers. There's a few ways I could think to manage this: ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
