How does Ubuntu indexes USB devices?
cn flag

I was looking inside sys/bus/usb/drivers/usb and I want to figure out how does Ubunto give numbers-id to each new device.

For example, I've noticed that some devices get the 1-{index} where index is an upgoing number. Yet, other devices like Toshiba get 2-{}.

Does any of you maybe have documantation on how does it work?

Ubuntu 20.04

I wonder what does the <Esc>+<n> command line shortcut mean.

For example I typed the pwd command and then <Esc>+<n> pressed. Here is what happens next:

$ pwd
`<Esc>+<n>` pressed

What does this : stand for? What is it? Googling for such combination does not yield any useful result.

I need a little bit of help installing Ubuntu on my computer.

IMPORTANT!! This PC in question - an HP ProBook 4540s - has a weird BIOS-EFI setup.

ProBooks of this era have a similar BIOS-EFI chipset, though your mileage may vary from model to model.

All the laptop can do at this point is boot and install in BIOS mode. So, after booting the medium in BIOS, I run the installer as normal and it comple ...

Resize swap partition on Ubuntu 20.04 using encrypted LVM

I have a pretty standard Ubuntu 20.04 setup, with LVM and encrypted hard drive. However, the standard setup seems to have provided a very small 900 MB swap (or did I choose that?), and it now frequently causes me problems with running out of memory, despite having 16 GB of RAM. I have plenty of available space on my 500 GB SSD, but have not been able to find clear instruction for how I can increase my s ...

I want to install Ubuntu 20.04 on an Intel Nuc 10 gen i3 with a M2 1TB storage

Also, I want to create two partitions, / and /home into this M2 storage disk.

I have read a lot of people saying that Intel Nuc Bios (especially in the 10 and 11 generations) is troublesome with Linux and that the installation gets tricky. Other people say that M.2 didn't work properly with Linux. Others say that drivers (like Ethernet, audio, USB) didn't work well with Linux. I suspect they just ...

Duplicate system PATH variable (snap/bin:/snap/bin)
jp flag

When I run echo $PATH the duplicate output snap/bin:/snap/bin appears at the end and seems unusual.

 /usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games:/usr/local/games:/snap/bin:/snap/bin

Is this duplication undesired? If so, how can this be changed?

I have Ubuntu 20.10 on my aging desktop, and an Uhuru UM-925 USB microphone.

In alsamixer, there are several input sliders for the built-in analog 1/8" pins, but if I switch sound cards to the USB microphone one, it shows a single slider at 0. If I increase that bar, I instea ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
