login shell check is not working in .profile
vn flag

Ubuntu 20.04, 5.8.0-63-generic, gnome-shell, gdm3

My login shell is set to /bin/sh

and I have this line in my $HOME/.profile file:

shopt -q login_shell > /dev/null 2>&1 || export SHELL=/bin/zsh

Now from my understanding export SHELL=/bin/zsh should not be executed on login right? because it is a login shell so shopt -q login_shell > /dev/null 2>&1 is True.

But I am getting $SHELL as / ...

Ubuntu startup disc is not working
cn flag

I downloaded the .iso file for Ubuntu 20.04, to create a startup disc. I followed the instructions on the main Ubuntu site. The first problem was that Startup Disc Creator would not allow the named file to be accepted. The file name ended .iso.part. I had to change the name of the downloaded file to .iso for it to be accepted. My USB drive stick then was loaded with the file. When I powered up my laptop ...

After using grub-customizer, how do I recover the ZFS Grub2 menu options on Ubuntu 20.04?
cn flag

After using grub-customizer for a bit (which I now know is a bad idea), my grub menu looks very different from the default. It's missing the history menu, which contains snapshots, and some of the entries that are supposed to be inside it are in the main menu: Picture of grub menu, taken with grub-emu

Artix is on /dev/sda1, and Ubuntu is on /dev/nvme0.

How can I restore the default, which has the following four entries?

Pulseaudio: how to stop audio sink from switching automatically to usb-c hub?
us flag

I'm using Ubuntu 21.04 with an intel tablet and a lenovo usb-c hub that has an audio adapter.

I never have anything hooked into the audio jack on usb-c hub, yet every time I plug my tablet into the usb-c hub the sound output switches to the usb-c hub instead of staying routed to the tablet speakers. I then have to go either into settings or use a sound output extension to switch it back to the sp ...

How to change TTY screen refresh rate?

Linux starts at 60 hz, but Xorg goes up to 144. Monitor has to restart itself which obviously takes ages. I guess it's a minor problem, but it might help me solve a couple more.

Instead, I want my laptop to suspend when the lid is closed (this is the behaviour currently if no external displays are connected)

The exact same question has been asked here - 16.04 - When laptop lid is closed, the desktop switches to external monitor

I followed the steps in the answer - https://askubuntu.com/a/790136/785975 but that didn't work (maybe because of the updated Ubuntu version?)

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
