Optimize system for rapidly loading large volumes of data

I'm running a complex Matlab program on my Ubuntu computer. It needs to load several .MAT files, each of which is several GB on disk and larger in RAM. I know it is possible to run this program - a coworker of mine who has a MacBook with 32 GB of RAM almost never sees it crash - but my tower, with 128 GB of RAM and Ubuntu 22.04, has not yet successfully run it all the way through, always crashing for la ...

Stay on 5.19 HWE kernel
us flag

Recently linux-generic-hwe-22.04 on 22.04 switched to using the 6.2 kernel series form 5.19, which doesn't work well on my hardware.

How can I stay on the 5.19 series? I guess I could just pin myself on the current 5.19 kernel (5.19.0-50) but will there be further patches to this series?

I could uninstall the hwe package but that would put me back on 5.15.

Using Ubuntu 23.04 the screen resolution changed from 1920x1080 to 1024x768 for no apparent reason. It went back to 1920x1080 for a short time but 1024x786 returned when I rebooted it.I then tried reinstalling the operating system with Ubuntu 22.04 but the problem persists. I just recently purchased a new Razer 14 (2023) laptop and installed Ubuntu 23.04 on it. The SSD is partitioned in half and dual-boots Windows 11. After the HWE kernel update on August 3, 2023, several things started appearing on my Xubuntu 22.04 system's journald.log that weren't appearing either with kernel 5.15 or 5.19.

The first one was the issue I posted yesterday here and luckily was solved by downloading the .bin file manually and regenerating the kernel image. Why should that be necessary though?

The second issue is the fact that I keep  ...

Wrong packet per second value on vlan interface tcp traffic
cg flag

I get wrong results when I check pps value on sub interface (vlan interface), on Ubuntu 22.04, but I know other versions have this problem as well.

I send traffic 100mbps to my test machine. On standard interface eth0 I have approx 9k pps, when I receive 100mbps by vlan tagged interface eth0.20 I have 700pps.

The problem occurs with TCP traffic, UDP is ok.

Has anyone encountered a similar problem?

My .deb package contains a postinst script that modifies the package depending on the user's operating system.

I would like to make sure that this postinst script is re-run when the user upgrades their version of Ubuntu. Is this guaranteed to happen, or do I need to configure the script to ensure that it is run again?

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
